Jon Hopkins and ANNA team up for a “night version” of “Deep in the Glowing Heart.”

Jon Hopkins has revealed a transcendent new collaboration with Brazilian techno producer ANNA, “Deep In The Glowing Heart (Night Version).” The original version of “Deep In The Glowing Heart” is found on Hopkins’ Music For Psychedelic Therapy, released last November on Domino. Talking about the original, Hopkins said there is a feeling that “music can cleanse you, music can guide you through.” Today’s “Night Version” takes you on a very different journey. Evolving over a month-long trans-Atlantic collaborative process, “Deep In The Glowing Heart (Night Version)” feels like an explosive release of energy, inspired by Hopkins’ return to regular DJing this year. With early versions of this track being premiered to huge crowds by both artists at their DJ sets across the world – including ANNA at Coachella and Hopkins at Fabric – “Deep In The Glowing Heart (Night Version)” is now available to hear widely for the first time.

Of the collaboration, Hopkins says: “I first came across ANNA’s music through her track ‘Hidden Beauties’, which I found myself playing in DJ sets all the time and always goes down so well. I then asked her to remix ‘Singularity’ and the results were so amazing I was super keen to work with her again but in a more collaborative way, rather than just handing over stems. We went back and forth a lot and it flowed really well. I love how this one turned out, it’s such a meeting of our two styles.”

ANNA adds: “It is a big honor to be able to create music together with Jon. His music is part of my daily life, part of my meditations, my long walks and contemplative moments. My remix for his track ‘Singularity’ had a huge impact on my career and getting to know Jon better since then, and collaborate on this version of DITGH, it feels like our relationship has come full circle!”

Music For Psychedelic Therapy was Hopkins’ first full-length since the release of sister albums, the GRAMMY-nominated Singularity (2018) and Immunity (2013), and it was a departure in sound from these records; “an album with no beats, not one drum sound, something that is closer to a classical symphony than a dance / electronica record.”

Review: Jon Hopkins – Music for Psychedelic Therapy

How do you follow up releasing two records of house music, club beats, and dub tracks? If you’re Jon Hopkins, you do it by releasing Music for Psychedelic Therapy – a gorgeous record of ambient meditations that doesn’t have a single beat on it.

As Hopkins said in the liner notes from the press release I received for this album, “I feel I explored that particular sound (house and club music) as much as I could. Next, I wanted to make something that faced the opposite direction, something very far away from a cosmic party or a set of festival-ready bangers…Something looking inwards, something egoless, with no attempts made to ‘fit in.’ It felt like time for a total reset, to wait for music to appear from a different place.”

I don’t think I can put it better than that, and this album is already difficult to describe. It’s more of an experience than a record. “Welcome” sets you up for chakra alignment and to get you into your meditation space. After that follow three tracks called “Tayos Caves, Ecuador,” which put you into a cool, quiet place suitable for dreaming, sleeping, or the “total reset” he mentioned.

The entire record is a reset for whatever is bothering you at the time. “Love Flows Over Us in Prismatic Waves” feels like light hitting you through a window as you watch a rabbit bounce across your lawn. “Deep in the Glowing Heart” reflects the place we all hope to find and reside in at some point in our lives, hopefully in this plane and the next. These are the first two tracks of a thirty-five-minute uninterrupted journey that continues with the hopeful “Ascending, Dawn Sky,” the cosmic energy-tinged “Arriving,” and the beautiful, tear-inducing “Sit Around the Fire” – in which music is set to a recording of the spiritualist Ram Dass.

It’s a record that’s stunning with its simplicity and subtlety. Let it calm and warm you.

Top 15 singles of 2020: #’s 5 – 1

Here we are at the top of the list!

#5: Too Free – “Elastic”

Yes, another song by Too Free. This thing is a sexy floor-filler EDM track that has an underlying hint of goth menace to it that immediately catches your ears.

#4: Jon Hopkins – “Singing Bowl (Ascension)”

If 2020 did anything right, it forced all of us to sit and be here. There was often nothing else to do. It was a year of zazen if you let it be so. Along comes Jon Hopkins with this lovely, stunning track suitable for meditation and making out – again two things that we were given a lot of time to do in 2020. Everyone needed to hear this last year, and any other year before or since.

#3: Matt Karmil – “PB”

I don’t know what “PB” means. Peanut butter? Pittsburgh? Pulsating beats? Yeah, that’s probably it, because this dance track is full of them.

#2: Kelly Lee Owens – “Melt!”

Yes, Ms. Owens has two tracks in my top 15 singles of 2020. I think she is the only person alive who can pull off an absolute club banger about global warming. She does nothing but amaze me and make me want to smash my digital turntables with a twelve-pound sledge hammer.

#1: Flat Worms – “Market Forces”

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that my favorite single of 2020 comes from my favorite album of 2020. Everything about this song works on a high level – beat, riffs, lyrics, and vocals. It moves and slugs like a professional boxer as it throws out lyrics about getting off your ass and shaking illusions out of your head so you can embrace the present and reality.

There you have it. Keep your mind open.

“The Longest Day” charity compilation for the Alzheimer’s Association features Moby, Beach Slang, Anna Calvi, TR/ST, and more.

As part of the Alzheimer’s Association‘s yearly fundraiser, The Longest DayMon Amie Records announces a benefit album to be released on CD, vinyl, and digitally with 100% of profits going to the organization.  The album will be released on June 19th and features previously unreleased material from Anna Calvi, Moby, Algiers, Daniel AverySad13Cold SpecksRhys ChathamRituals of MineM83 alumni J. Laser, and Wolfmanhattan Project (comprised of legends Mick Collins,Kid CongoPowers, and Bob Bert).

It is also the first time the Extended Mix of New Order‘s “Nothing But A Fool” will be released on vinyl. Hayden Thorpe and Jon Hopkins‘ haunting cover of “Goodbye Horses” was originally released in 2013 but hasn’t been available for over 5 years.  See below for the full track listing.

The compilation is now available for pre-order, and those who order a physical format will have the option to include a name of a loved one affected by dementia in the liner notes.   The artwork features photographs by acclaimed photographer Ebru Yildiz, who documented her mother’s journey with Alzheimer’s.

MORE ABOUT DEMENTIA & THE ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION: Currently every 65 seconds, someone in the US develops Alzheimer’s or a form of dementia. At the current rate, 1 in 4 people will develop the disease, and this rate is increasing at an alarming rate. It is currently the 6th leading cause of death in the US and the #1 cause of death in England. The disease doesn’t just affect those who are diagnosed. Caregivers provide over 18.6 billion hours, valued at $244 billion in unpaid care. The physical and emotional stress on caregivers is so severe that they are reported to die at a 63% higher rate than people the same age who are not caring for someone with dementia. The Alzheimer’s Association is the #1 resource for anyone dealing with dementia. They offer care and support for all those facing the disease, including a 24/7 free help line, referrals, and support groups. They are currently investing $185 Million toward treatment, prevention and a cure. They also speak up for the needs and rights of people with Alzheimer’s via government advocacy.

MORE ABOUT THE LABEL: Mon Amie Records is a one-woman operation out of Brooklyn, NY.  Founded in 2010 by Mona Dehghan who utilizes her experience from working at major indie labels Sub Pop, Domino and Mute to release personal passion projects.  Her most notable releases so far include two reissues of Q Lazzarus’s “Goodbye Horses.” Mona’s father was diagnosed with dementia in February of 2019, and her grandmother passed from the disease in 1998.  Having been closely affected by the disease twice, she’s using her skillset to raise funds and create awareness in the hopes of not facing this devastating disease a third time. Also, research suggests that listening to music can provide emotional and behavioral benefits for people with dementia. Musical memories are often preserved in Alzheimer’s patients because key brain areas linked to musical memory are relatively undamaged by the disease. Studies also show music helps decrease anxiety in those living with dementia.

Jon Hopkins helps us meditate with “Singing Bowl (Ascension).”

Jon Hopkins presents “Singing Bowl (Ascension),” the first in a new series of “Meditations”  that is available to stream now and appears on “Quiet,” his 24-hour long collaborative playlist for Spotify. Designed with deep meditation experiences in mind, “Singing Bowl (Ascension)” perfectly fits into Jon’s transcendent selections. To create this piece, Hopkins recorded a range of vibrations created by a 100 year-old singing bowl found in an antique shop in Delhi. He then fed these into a laptop running a simple, generative system that triggered the hits and drones at random. This would allow synchronicity to play a central part in the composition process, and remove as much “thinking” as possible from the writing. An earlier version of this generative piece was used as a sound installation at last year’s Helsinki Arts Festival.

Hopkins further explains the inspiration behind the track: “Like so many people I felt pretty paralysed by this situation when it first unfolded. All my plans for the year were cancelled, and everything felt so weird and dreamlike. But gradually I found I wanted to create something – to find peace and perspective through making music, as I have always done. It felt beautifully pure to just use one acoustic sound source, and no synths. It was liberating to write something without playing anything on a keyboard – to avoid the familiar diatonic scale for the first time, and thus avoid any of my own conditioned playing habits. There was a magic in setting this generative system in motion then just letting the vibrations of this bowl create their own world. I listened to harmonics layering on top of harmonics for hours and was transported.

Jon Hopkins and Kelly Lee Owens create “Luminous Spaces.”

Jon Hopkins and Kelly Lee Owens present their new single and first collaborative recording, “Luminous Spaces,” available digitally now and on 12” on January 24, 2020. The track was originally destined to be a remix of Hopkins’ “Luminous Beings” by Owens, but after the pair worked closely together in the studio, it morphed into a standalone single. The two have built a working relationship over the past few years through sharing the same bill in live capacities and on DJ line-ups across the globe. Their work perfectly complements each other; Hopkins transcendent, dancefloor-focused electronics paired with Owens’ entrancing vocals and ethereal techno production creates a euphoric collaboration.

Hopkins on working with Owens:
“This project started as something very different from what you’re hearing now – I wanted Kelly to do a straight remix of ‘Luminous Beings.’ I sent her the parts, but what she sent back just felt like something totally new, and had the potential to be so much more than a remix. She’d recorded these beautiful, uplifting vocal lines and had come up with joyous new riffs that recalled for me the best bits of the 90s trance/euphoria that I had grown up loving. I got a beautiful sense of nostalgia and a true heart-lifting joy the first time I heard it, and it was so painless to take it from there to a finished piece – related and born out of ‘Luminous Beings’ but very much its own thing.”

Owens on working with Hopkins:
‘Luminous Spaces’ initially began as a remix I did for Jon, which I also wrote vocals on top of. I sent the whole track to Jon for feedback and this lead to the start of a more collaborative effort, with him adding extra sound design/ production, and a new intro and outro, which I loved! The exchanging of ideas back and forth made it an extra special process for us and is why he decided to upgrade it to a full and proper collaboration. Our worlds truly colliding!

Hopkins has forged a reputation for music that marries the dancefloor to the devotional, and for live performances that are visceral, generous, charged with a rapt, sensuous beauty. He’s regarded by The New Yorker as “one of the most celebrated electronic musicians of his generation” for his five solo albums – as well as collaborations with Brian Eno, David Lynch and King Creosote, and film scores for The Lovely Bones and Monsters. Last year, Hopkins’ Singularity received a GRAMMY nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album.

Kelly Lee Owens bridges the gaps between cavernous techno, spectral pop, and krautrock’s mechanical pulse, and is known for her energetic, engaging live shows and DJ sets. She is also an in-demand remixer, working with Björk, Mount Kimbie, St Vincent and Jenny Hval. Her debut self-titled album was released via Smalltown Supersound in 2017.

Top 20 singles of 2018: #’s 20 – 16

2018 was the first year I started keeping track of my favorite singles of the year. It’s probably because there were so many good ones, including some that were just released as singles and others that stuck in my head for days. Who made the top 20? Read on and find out.

#20: “Sleepers” by Exploded View – This dreamy psych / synth track is a trippy mix of Velvet Underground and 80’s synthwave. It’s the kind of track that makes you wonder, “Who is this?” as soon as you hear it.

#19: “Nocturnal” by Magic Wands – Easily one of the best synthwave tracks of the year, this lush song is great for make-out sessions and has just enough of a dark edge to keep it dangerous.

#18: “You Are Dinner” by Constant Lovers – Good grief, does this thing have power. It’s a wild rock track with punk guitars and spat lyrics that the lead singer almost screws up but uses the moment to push his vocals even further.

#17: “Wheel of Fortune” by Protomartyr – The video of this shows one of the band members punching himself in the face. That’s apt, because this songs hits you just like that (especially when the chorus kicks in).

#16: “Singularity” by Jon Hopkins – The build of this electronic track is stunning to behold. It almost takes you by surprise like a big wave you didn’t see coming while standing hip-deep in the ocean. It’s over far too soon.

Who made the top 15? Come back tomorrow to find out.

Jon Hopkins is proud to share the video for the title track off his highly acclaimed new album, Singularity. Directed by Academy Films’ Seb Edwards, “Singularity” is the visual pinnacle of this project, and a continuation and deepening of all the themes that pervade Hopkins’ work.

Jon Hopkins says of the video: “This is the single most epic video I’ve ever had made. Seb has been a friend and collaborator for nearly 15 years now, but this is the first opportunity we’ve had to work with total freedom on a video for my own music. The power of what he has done left me speechless the first time I saw it. He translated the themes of destruction and defiance that I fed into the music into a powerful, violent ballet between male and female and I totally love it.”

“I’ve always loved Jon’s work and we’ve been wanting to collaborate for a while,” comments Seb Edwards. “‘Singularity’ is such an incredible track, its merciless intensity somehow reflects our troubled times. I wanted to capture the feeling of defiance that rises from the initial brutality. The track is ultimately about acceptance and finding peace in nature. I hope I did it justice.”

In what has been an incredibly successful 2018 thus far, Hopkins is currently on a sold out tour in North America and will return to Europe and UK for a slew of sold out dates. A special Pitchfork Live stream will take place Tuesday, September 25th at 2pm Eastern. A full list of shows including festival appearances can be found below.
Additionally, Jon Hopkins and Daniel Avery have recently remixed each other’s songs. Listen to Jon Hopkins’ “COSM” (Daniel Avery remix) and Daniel Avery’s “Glitter” (Jon Hopkins remix) HERE.

“Pitched between heat-seeking acid house and ambient bliss, the techno auteur’s first album since 2013 is a beat-music odyssey that thrums with spiritual resonance” — Pitchfork, Best New Music

“With one weird trick, Jon Hopkins collapses the tedious boundary between dancefloor hedonism and chin-stroking ‘intelligence’ that plagues so much electronic music.” — SPIN, Best Songs of 2018 So Far

“Simple melodies fracture and layer into a complex soundscape; lush sounds and textures are constantly developing and regenerating. They break and rebuild, conjuring a tale of evolution and destruction.”
Stereogum, Best Albums of 2018 So Far

moving electronic album this year.” — The AV Club, Best Albums of 2018 So Far

the vast and detailed landscape.” — Uproxx, Best Albums of 2018 So Far

“From beginning to end, through songs fast or slow, ambient or hard-hitting, Hopkins never fails to provide the listener with an aural massage. He displays the perfect balance of tones, textures, and volumes in a highly-effortless way.” — HYPEBEAST, Best Music Projects of 2018 So Far

“A spellbindingly impactful LP, Singularity blends ethereal choruses with nostalgic instrumentals, all constructed around industrious, reverb-heavy noise tunnels.” – INTERVIEW

Jon Hopkins released his new album, Singularity, earlier this month. Debuting at #3 on the Billboard US Dance/Electronic Chart, #9 in the UK overall, and #1 on the UK Dance and Independent Charts, it marks Hopkins first top 10 release in the UK. Following Moogfest, Festival of Disruption, and tomorrow night’s sold out performance at Elsewhere in Brooklyn, Hopkins will return for a proper North American tour this fall. Special guests Daniel Avery and Leon Vynehall will support. All dates are below and tickets are on sale this Thu. May 24th.

Where Hopkins’ last album, Immunity, charted the dark alternative reality of an epic night out, Singularity explores the dissonance between dystopian urbanity and the green forest. Shaped by his experiences with meditation and trance states, the album explores the connectivity of the mind, sonics and the natural world. It flows seamlessly from rugged techno to transcendent choral music, from solo acoustic piano to psychedelic ambient. Its epic musical palette is visceral and emotionally honest: with a destructive opener full of industrial electronics and sonic claustrophobia and a redemptive, pure end on solo piano.

For more insight into Singularity, head over to NPR Music for a Track By Track breakdown by Hopkins, and keep your ears peeled for a Song Exploder episode, out this Wednesday.
