The Beths announce North American summer tour.

“That sense of kinetic energy cancels out whatever retro inclinations they have: like the best rock & roll, they gain power from living in the moment.” – Rolling Stone, “30 Best Artists We Saw in Austin”

“On Future Me Hates Me, singer Elizabeth Stokes presides over a string of pop-rock songs too clever, too charming and too endlessly disarming to miss.” – NPR Music, The Austin 100

“Beyond the catchy songs the Beths packed into their 2018 debut album, there was a standout feature: the intricate vocal harmonies that gave each of the melodies a richness several cuts above the typical indie-rock recording. Live, the band demonstrated that those harmonies are the real deal…” – Chicago Tribune, “12 best up-and-coming bands”

The Beths have announced a summer North American tour in support of their breakthrough release Future Me Hates Me, out now via Carpark Records. Tickets are on sale. The band recently brought their harmonious and energetic live show stateside, playing sold out venues in New York, Chicago, Boston, Washington DC, Toronto, and more. Additionally, the band returned to SXSW to much fanfare, being named a standout act by Rolling Stone, NPR Music, Chicago Tribune, Austin American Statesman, and others. Ahead of their next North American run, the Beths will tour Europe, where many of the dates have already sold out or have been upgraded to bigger venues due to demand. Then, they’ll bookend the summer festival season with appearances at Primavera Sound, Pickathon, and Pukkelpop, as well as several Australian shows. The band will also be releasing its debut EP, Warm Blood, on vinyl for the first time via Carpark Records. The official release date is April 26th with some copies being available to purchase on tour soon.

Dead Kennedys celebrate their 40th anniversary with the upcoming release of “DK40.”

Out of the hundreds of punk bands that emerged from the late ’70s punk scene, only about a dozen or so have achieved iconic status four decades later. They include the Sex Pistols, the Clash and the Damned from the U.K.; the Ramones and Patti Smith Group from New York; X, the Germs and Black Flag from Los Angeles; and from San Francisco, the Dead Kennedys.

The DKs embodied the spirit of punk from the get-go. Their very name was a shocking reminder of the collapse of the American Dream. Then again, the name would be nothing if the Dead Kennedys didn’t have the goods to back it up.

DK40, a three-CD live collection due April 26 from Manifesto Records, offers the aural evidence that the Dead Kennedys were one of the most potent punk bands — period. It features the band serving up amped-up live versions of all their classic tracks, free from the constraints of the recording studio.

Formed in 1978 after guitarist East Bay Ray’s ad in The Recycler attracted the attention of singer Jello Biafra, they were soon joined by bassist Klaus Flouride; guitarist 6025 and drummer TedD.H Peligro soon took over the rule of the drum chair.  After gigging around the Bay Area, they soon built a reputation cemented by the release of their first single, “California Über Alles,” on their own DIY label, within a year of their formation. Over a boleroesque rhythm consisting of pounding drums, throbbing bass and jagged guitar lines, Biafra lays into then-and-future California Governor Jerry Brown and the hippy dream. The song includes such memorable lines as “It’s the suede denim secret police / They have come for your uncool niece.” With their follow-up, 1980’s “Holiday in Cambodia,” the DKs showed no signs of letting up. It offered a brutal take on the powers behind the Vietnam War, with East Bay Ray’s iconic guitar parts showing people that the DKs were very much a musical force to be reckoned with. The band went onto release their debut album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, in 1980, featuring newly recorded versions of “California Über Alles” and “Holiday in Cambodia,” along with other classics such as “Kill the Poor,” “Let’s Lynch the Landlord” and a notable cover of the Elvis Presley hit “Viva Las Vegas.”

The subsequent releases, the 1981 EP, In God We Trust, Inc., 1982’s Plastic Surgery Disasters and 1985’s Frankenchrist albums followed. Live versions of the material from these releases are showcased on DK40.  Disc 1 captures the DKs at the Paradiso in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1982, with a 13-song set, including “Holiday in Cambodia,” “Nazi Punks Fuck Off” and “Too Drunk to Fuck.”  The second disc has the DKs at Alabama Halle in Munich, Germany, also in 1982, with an 18-track set, including “Man With the Dogs,” “Police Truck” and “Chemical Warfare.”  The final disc of DK40 captures the band back on its home turf, at the Farm in San Francisco in 1985, with a 16-song romp that includes “Soup Is Good Food,” “Stars And Stripes Of Corruption” and “MTV Get Off The Air.”

While the DKs continue on following lineup changes, including the departure of Jello Biafra – vocalist Skip McSkipster of the Wynona Riders now bringing the songs to thousands of fans — DK40 captures the band at the height of their youthful exuberance, with the classic lineup of Jello Biafra, East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride and D.H Peligro.

You’ll find DK40 even more fun than a holiday in Cambodia and the band’s blistering counsel is even more relevant today. They are here to remind us, “It’s never too late to think.”

Review: Mdou Moctar – Ilana (the Creator)

Mdou Moctar’s new album, Ilana (The Creator), is a powerful, stunning record full of amazing guitar work, trance-inducing vocals, and uplifting energy sure to bring you up from any blues you might be feeling.

Starting with “Kamane Tarhanin,” a slow burn that builds to an inferno, the album makes your jaw drop in just the first track.  The slightly fuzzy vocals on “Asshet Akal” mix well with the guitar licks that are somehow rough and pristine at the same time, like a gem pulled fresh from the ground.  “Anna” is a lovely track that might be a love song.  I’m not sure, since I can’t translate the lyrics, but Moctar’s vocals and the overall sound of the song make it appear as a love song.  In a way, all of Moctar’s work is about love: love of country, fellow man, nature, art, and the Creator.

“Takamba” is a nice instrumental track, and “Tarhatazed” is another track with mind-blowing guitar work that has influences ranging from Hendrix to ZZ Top.  “Wiwasharnine” is a toe-tapping, hip-shaking rocker that boosts your spirits with its handclaps, soaring guitar, and joyful vocals.

The title track is a rocking takedown of the French government’s treatment of Nigerian uranium mine workers.  The album ends with the beautiful “Tumastin,” an almost meditative track that sticks with you for a few moments once it’s done.

This is one of the best albums of the year so far, and a must-have for any fan of Tuareg music.

The 2091 Lollapalooza lineup is here.

If you didn’t know it already, here’s the lineup for the 2019 Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago, Illinois.  It’s…something.  The switch by Lollapalooza’s organizers from mostly rock acts to a wider variety of genres is clearly evident by now.  Ariana Grande is the headliner at a festival that used to boast Nine Inch Nails as a headliner.  Again, this is nothing new and Ms. Grande is a fine performer, indeed, but you might have to do a lot of research into this lineup if you’re looking for rock and some of its variants.  I recommend Idles for that.  Their set will probably be one of the loudest and wildest of the entire festival.

Amyl and the Sniffers’ first full-length album due May 10th.

Amyl and the Sniffers announce today that their debut album will be released on May 10th. Check out the first track from the album, ‘Monsoon Rock’, out on Rough Trade (UK/Europe), ATO/Flightless Records (North America) and Flightless Records (Australia & New Zealand).

“Monsoon Rock is just a song to rage to and celebrating good gigs / live music, we wrote it around the time of Gizzfest 2017 when it was pissing down with rain but everybody still got into it, just muddier and wetter and real feral. We ran out of time to make a video and it’s always fun making funny shit, if you don’t have a sense of humor and can’t laugh what’s the point of being alive?”

Amyl and the Sniffers are Amy Taylor (vocals), Gus Romer (bass) Bryce Wilson (drums) and Declan Martens (guitar). They formed in Melbourne, Australia in early 2016 and wrote, self-recorded and released their debut EP, Giddy Up, all in a span of twelve hours.

Their second EP, Big Attractions, was released in February 2017 then re-released as a 12” double EP with Giddy Up, through Homeless Records in Australia and Damaged Goods in the UK. Both PBS FM and Triple R FM in Melbourne made the record ‘Album of the Week’ and the band went on the sell out multiple Australian headline shows. 2018 saw limited edition vinyl copies of Giddy Up/Big Attractions fly off the shelves, pushing Amyl and the Sniffers into the Top 40 on the UK Vinyl Charts.

The band made their international debut at The Great Escape festival in May followed by sold out shows in London, before flying out to the Los Angeles to join King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard on a 22-date tour of the United States. Return trips to both the UK and US followed later in the year, where the band played to packed houses and rave festival reviews.

Already signed to Flightless Records for Australia and New Zealand, the band capped off a monster year by signing with ATO Records for North America and Rough Trade Records for the rest of the world. They were also nominated as Best New Act at the Q Awards and won the $30,000 Levis Prize.

Amyl and the Sniffers will be playing the following shows: 1st April – The Bodega – Nottingham, UK 2nd April – Heaven – London, UK 3rd April – Brudenell Social Club – Leeds, UK 4th April – The Louisiana – Bristol, UK 6th April – The Deaf Institute – Manchester, UK 7th April – The Haunt – Brighton, UK 8th April – Botanique – Brussels, BELGIUM 10th April – Paradiso Noord – Amsterdam, HOLLAND 11th April – Molotow – Hamburg, GERMANY 12th April – Stengade – Copenhagen, DENMARK 13th April – Debaser – Stockholm, SWEDEN 15th April – Zukunft – Berlin, GERMANY 16th April – Strom – Munich, GERMANY 17th April – Bumann & Sohn – Cologne, GERMANY 20th April – Motel Mozaique – Rotterdam, HOLLAND 21th April – Paaspop Festival – Schijndel, HOLLAND

Review: BODEGA – Witness Scroll

Recorded in May of 2018 at two different venues in the United Kingdom, BODEGA’s first live album, Witness Scroll, is a great capture of their apparently wild shows…which I still haven’t seen, much to my dismay.

Opening with a quirky mix of samples and computer sounds, the bass-heavy “Name Escape,” kicks the album off to a funky start as the band complains and pokes fun at not being able to remember people you see at the same clubs and coffee shops every day.  The stabbing guitar chords of “Bookmarks,” (an all-too-true song about becoming a slave to modern technology) remind one of early B-52’s records.

The live version of “Can’t Knock the Hustle” is downright dangerous with it’s hard-hitting guitar chords and thudding beats.  Lead singer Ben Hozie describes the previously unreleased song “New Vanguard Revival” as “a genre exercise.”  I think he means an exercise in post-punk, because the jagged tempo of it is pure post-punk.  “Margot” leads into “Stain Glaze” – a Husker Du-loving tune from Ben Kozie and co-vocalist Nikki Belfiglio‘s first band, Bodega Bay.  Next up is the self-pleasure anthem “Gyrate,” which ramps up the guitar fuzz live compared to the album version on their excellent debut Endless Scroll from last year.

It’s no surprise that the album version of “Jack in Titanic” tore up the BBC radio airwaves after this tour because it and this live version are so damn catchy (and witty) you can’t ignore them.  The album ends with a nearly ten-minute version of “Truth Is Not Punishment” – a vicious track with some surf touches that slowly builds to a frantic pace and urgency.

If this album doesn’t make you want to see BODEGA live, I’m not sure if anything will.  Something might be wrong with you.  You might be too deep in your Twitter or Instagram feeds and missing an amazing band.

Keep your mind open.

Review: JODI – Pop Espontaneo

Pop Espontaneo by the Paraguayan duo JODI is a great collection of psychedelic garage music from 1969 through 1975 remastered and released by Guerren Records.  The duo, brothers Joern and Dirk Wenger, used guitars, Moog synths, exotic instruments, and distortion pedals to create stuff ahead of its time, and Pop Espontaneo is full of unreleased home recordings from the Wengers.

The opener, “Loveseller,” drenched in fuzz and falsetto vocals, sounds like a lost track from Thee Oh Sees.  Besides having a great title, “Altered Termites in My Room” has a great 1960’s South American secret agent groove.  “Change Your Mind About Me” is psych-pop with a wild guitar solo.  The guitar on “Night Dreamer” is also excellent.  It soars like a 32-bit eagle in a fantasy game.  “Save My Soul” and “Take Me Higher” are weird rockers that belong in some kind of horror-disco musical.

The organ work on “A Sunburst of Bees” (another great title) is outstanding.  It almost reaches demented church organ levels.  “Where Are All My Friends” sounds like it could’ve been recorded by Ariel Pink yesterday.  “I Will Wait for You” reveals JODI’s love of Rubber Soul (as does “Tell Me Why” five tracks later) with its beats, guitar chords, and vocal work.  It’s great.  “I Found You in the Night” reveals JODI’s love of the Kinks‘ early work.  Just listen to that beat and tell me I’m wrong.

The wild psychedelic guitar solos continue on “I Loved You Once,” and the church organ continues on the Simon and Garfunkel-like “Hard to Be Alone” – one of three “bonus tracks” on an album that is essentially all bonus tracks found in an office of the Wenger family’s paint factory after forty years.  The other two are “Searching for a Figure” (with wild synths) and another Kinks-like fun tune, “Toys.”

The fact that these master tapes survived in a tropic environment in a desk drawer is amazing.  It’s amazing as this collection, really.  The Wenger brothers deserve to be better known by the world at large, and Pop Espontaneo is a great place to start.

Keep your mind open.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s new album, “Fishing for Fishies,” due April 26th.

Cover art

Never ones to rest on their laurels, Australian psych rockers King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have announced their fourteenth album (in less than seven years, by the way), Fishing for Fishies, will be released on April 26th.

According to lead singer Stu Mackenzie, “We tried to make a blues record. A blues-boogie-shuffle-kinda-thing, but the songs kept fighting it – or maybe it was us fighting them. Ultimately though we let the songs guide us this time; we let them have their own personalities and forge their own path. Paths of light, paths of darkness. This is a collection of songs that went on wild journeys of transformation.”

You can pre-order Fishing for Fishies at Flightless Records, and the band is about to embark on yet another massive tour across the globe.  Catch them if you can.  They never disappoint.

Los Angeles-based songwriter and singer, Claude Fontaine, announces her debutself-titled album, out April 26th on Innovative Leisure (LA-based label who has worked with the likes of BADBADNOTGOODRhyeAllah-LasNosaj ThingHanni El KhatibNick WaterhouseClassixx, etc). Last month, Fontaine presented listeners with early single “Cry For Another,” a track praised by the Los Angeles Times as “a straight-up rocksteady song that conjures the essence of Kingston, Jamaica, in the late 1960s” and a “wonderful early warning” of what’s to come. Fontaine even made a special appearance at Ulla Johnson’s New York Fashion Week show in support of the single; Johnson, immediately upon hearing the track, personal reached out to Fontaine to perform it.

A love song to classic reggae and Brazilian music, Claude Fontaine is an album honoring that feeling of finding a home away from home. Fontaine wrote and demoed her debut album after living in London off Portobello Road and stumbling into Honest Jon’s, a long-lived spot for fringe records collected from the furthest edges of the world.

She was immediately captivated by the old Studio OneTrojan, and Treasure Isle records she was discovering—the same records that got The Clash covering “Police And Thieves,” and the Slits sharing a bill with Steel Pulse. “I wandered in one day and from the first moment I was under a spell,” Fontaine says. “I was transfixed.”

Tracked at both Kingsize Sound Labs in Northeast Los Angeles and Sage and SoundChet Baker’s legendary old studio in Hollywood, Claude Fontaine was recorded with a murderer’s row of session players, including Airto Moreira, the Brazilian drummer whose work both solo and in collaboration—with Miles DavisAstrud GilbertoChick CoreaAnnette Peacock—make him an actual living legend, Tony Chin, (Althea and Donna, King Tubby, Dennis Brown), RonnieMcQueen (Steel Pulse), Rock Deadrick (Ziggy Marley), Andre De Santanna (Sergio Mendes, Flora Purim), Gibi Dos Santos (Sergio Mendes), Nando Duarte (Gal Costa, Elza Soares), Fabiano Do Nascimento (Mia Doi Todd), and Jaime Hinckson (Hollie Cook, Daniel ‘Bambaata’ Marley).

“I hope this record will transport people,” said Fontaine. “I want it to feel like those lost records, like it got lost in the dusty bottom bin of some world music store in London because that’s how I felt when I walked in to that record store. I want it to be its own world.”

For those in the LA area, Fontaine will celebrate the album’s release with a show at Zebulon on Fri. April 26th. Ticket are available here
