Review: Brett Naucke – Mirror Ensemble

Chicago’s Brett Naucke teamed up with two other well-respected Chicago musicians, Natalie Chami and Whitney Johnson, to create Mirror Ensemble – an album that combines synthwave, ambient, and even a bit of indie rock to make a meditative gem.

“Vanity Well” gets things off to a mood-altering start, and then “The Glass Shifting” comes in sounding like something from the new Dune film score. The longest track on the album, “A Look That Tells Time,” takes its time to stretch out and let you relax into it with its temple-like bell sounds and lotus flower-drifting-on-a-lazy-river.

“Catch Your Breath,” at a quarter of the previous track’s length, is a short meditation, while “Parallax” is the sound of sunlight shining through a prism. Trust me, you’ll feel this when you hear it. “Rose Water” is equally delightful, while “Sleep with Your Windows Open” is going to become your new favorite song to put on your bedroom speakers this summer. The closer, “Late Century Reflection,” ends the album with slightly up-tempo beats and synths that rise like a flock of birds from the edge of a still lake.

It’s a lovely record, suitable for meditation, making out, or even just walking around the neighborhood.

Review: Situation Chicago 2

Situation Chicago 2 is a fine compilation of Chicago bands and artists, and proceeds go to helping artists and venues affected by the pandemic (which, by the way, is pretty much all of them). The project is part of the CIVL SAVE fund, which needs all the help it can get to support independent music venues throughout the Windy City (full disclosure, some of these venues are my favorite venues in the country).

“Sinistry” by MIIRRORS is a fiery live rock cut with some light goth touches. Robust‘s “Dont Know Why” is a smooth example of Chicago’s vibrant rap scene. The bass line alone on it make impregnate you. Speaking of great example of Chicago’s music culture, Fess Grandiose‘s “Keep the Rhythm Goin'” is a prime one of Chicago house music (a genre that, while popular, still deserves to be better known around the globe). Umphrey’s McGee and Bela Fleck team up on the bouncy and bright “Great American.” Reduxion‘s “The Imperial Boxmen” is sweet funk jazz that will make you want to spin your lover around the room. Speaking of fun, Jeff Park delivers a great instrumental cover of WAR‘s “Slippin’ into Darkness.”

“Drowning” by Neptune’s Core starts side B of the vinyl with strong power-pop hooks. Goth country makes an appearance with The Goddamn Gallows‘ “The Maker.” V.V. Lightbody‘s “Really Do Care” is a slice of dream-pop complete with birdsong and cat’s purr-like guitar. Erin McDougald‘s lovely, sexy “The Parting Glass” is a wonderful exemplar of Chicago’s jazz club scene and makes you want to seek out her live performances.

It’s a good compilation, and proceeds go to a great cause. You can’t miss.

Liam Kazar is “On a Spanish Dune” with his new single.

Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Liam Kazar presents a new single, “On a Spanish Dune,” with an accompanying video. It’s the follow-up to his charming debut, “Shoes Too Tight,” which gave a first look into Kazar’s joyful and vulnerable world. “On a Spanish Dune” is mellow and tinged with melancholia, undulating with wurlitzer and subtle synths. Mixed by Sam Griffin Owens, it features childhood friend Spencer Tweedy (drums), Chicago musician James Elkington (pedal steel, percussion), David Curtin (synths), plus vocals from Ohmme. The track illustrates Kazar’s aptness for colorful narration: “On a spanish dune // We’ll turn to the moon // So if you wanna go // I won’t leave tonight // While the cicadas sigh // And the river’s mouth is wide.

The accompanying video, directed by Jesse Morgan Young, features Kazar and friends and is filled with oddities. Young explains the video: “After Kazar hurriedly leaves before dawn he’s thwarted by car trouble. Rescued by an unnervingly cheerful loner, the two make their way to an abandoned farm only to find out it’s not so abandoned. An eccentric survivalist has made the isolated locale his home and they spend the evening enjoying each other’s company and a bit of the stranger’s funky elixir.”

“On a Spanish Dune” continues to champion Kazar’s wide musical range. Throughout the last decade, he has been recognized for his adaptability and deftness in the studio and on stage, leading to tours and collaborations with Jeff Tweedy, Chance the Rapper, Steve Gunn, Daniel Johnston, Kids These Days, amongst others.

Ric Wilson and Terrace Martin’s “Move Like This” will get you dancing.

Chicago-based hip-hop artist Ric Wilson and LA-based producer / musician Terrace Martin have released their new collaborative EP, They Call Me Disco (via Free Disco/EMPIRE/Sounds of Crenshaw), and present the video for standout track, “Move Like This”. “Move Like This” follows “funky feel-good” (HYPEBEAST) lead single, “Chicago Bae” (Feat. BJ The Chicago Kid).

Energetic and bouncing with a crisp beat, “Move Like This” is driven by a woozy synth and Wilson’s lively voice. The accompanying video, directed by A Solo Vision, was filmed in Chicago. Featuring Wilson and close friends, the video presents his vibrant, colorful aesthetic. 

“For ‘Move Like This,’ me and Terrace literally were watching videos from the Chicago House Festival when he was making the beat,” says Wilson. “I was dancing and this song was made for moving.”

They Call Me Disco is built on a retro backbone, seamlessly fusing funk-forward rhythms, Wilson’s playful and poignant lyrics, velvety vocal layers, and percussive beats. Following a string of singles and EPs, including Negrow Disco (2017), BANBA (2018), and last year’s summer single, “Yellowbrick”, Wilson’s funk/disco-infused take on rap lead to both Complex and NPR Music naming him a “Rising Chicago Rapper You Need To Know.” 

With a mutual respect for each other’s work, Wilson and Martin, a Grammy-nominated artist who’s worked extensively with the likes of Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Lalah Hathaway, Herbie Hancock, Kamasi Washington, and more, first linked up in 2019, starting work on the EP that would continue into 2020. “The disco-inspired funk never stops,” says Wilson. “Me and Terrace wanted to make something people can move to and free themselves.” Adds Martin, “This record is a beautiful reminder the disco never stops. Keep smiling, keep dancing, and keep loving.”

Liam Kazar’s debut single, “Shoes Too Tight,” is a home run in his first at-bat.

Liam Kazar, a Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, releases his debut single/video, “Shoes Too Tight.” Throughout the last decade, Kazar has been recognized for his adaptability and deftness in the studio and on stage, leading to tours and collaborations with Jeff Tweedy, Chance the Rapper, Steve Gunn, Daniel Johnston, Kids These Days, amongst others. His first offering, “Shoes Too Tight,” presents Kazar’s joyful and vulnerable world.
 
“Shoes Too Tight” is born from the strange and quick combination of the well-worn sound of a clavinet, blended with whatever noise you get when you turn on that weird synth sitting in the corner of the studio. The track features childhood friends Lane Beckstom (bass) and Spencer Tweedy (drums), who have shared stages with Kazar since they were young, plus vocals from Ohmme. It follows a single theme through all its nooks and crannies to a warm, tender end; a collage of lyrics that deal with lost time, lost chance, and the reconciliation of the two. In the accompanying video, directed by Austin Vesely and shot at Chicago’s Constellation, he and his background dancers channel 60s crooners, Lindsay Kemp, and Kazar’s own contemporary groove, daring you not to join them.
 
Since filming “Shoes Too Tight,” Kazar has spent the last many weeks staying at home in Kansas City, where he sometimes lives. He’s recorded a new song, “Holding Plans,” and created an accompanying lyric video. Additionally, Kazar is raising money via his Bandcamp for Constellation and the Hungry Brain, a treasure and hub for Chicago’s music community.
