Trouble in Mind and Paradise of Bachelors, in cooperation with the venerable Chicago venue the Empty Bottle, are proud to present Trouble in Paradise, a three-day festival showcasing a simpatico sampling of both record labels’ critically acclaimed and wide-ranging international rosters.

Over the course of several years trading records, intel, and jokes, Chicagoans Lisa and Bill Roe of Trouble in Mind and Brendan Greaves and Christopher Smith of Paradise of Bachelors (based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina) have developed an abiding appreciation for each others’ curatorial aesthetic, ethics, and shared bemusement about the shit business of music. Together they got a wild hair to hatch a plan for a festival that felt more like a party. It was, above all else, an excuse to bring together many artists who have never before graced the same stage—and to call something Trouble in Paradise.

The lineup, which features an array of artists including The Weather Station, Omni, Nap Eyes, and FACS, among many others, explores the shared terrain between the respective realms of one label named for a classic blues song and another named for a Herman Melville story. Apparently that means a dedication to compelling songwriters, guitarists, and sounds spanning unhinged rock and roll, architectonic pop, and the frontier fringes of folk and country.

Details about each evening’s lineup, and tickets, are below. A limited number of discounted $30 three-day passes are available. More artists will be announced soon, so please stay tuned.

Audiotree Music Festival is returning to Kalamazoo’s Arcadia Creek Festival Place on Saturday, September 22nd and Sunday, September 23rd for the 6th year in a row. Today, ATMF announces their 2018 lineup, including acts like Father John Misty, Local Natives, Real Estate, Khruangbin, and more. Single day tix start at $45 and two day tix start at $80.

ATMF was created by Audiotree, a Chicago-based artist discovery platform formed in 2011 by Kalamazoo natives Michael Johnston and Adam Thurston. The company promotes up-and-coming artists through live-streamed studio sessions, interviews, and takeaway performances. In 2015, Audiotree purchased esteemed Chicago venues, Schubas Tavern and Lincoln Hall, adding a live concert booking, promoting, and streaming division to the company. Over the past seven years, their online following has grown to include over 350k YouTube Subscribers. Now,  Audiotree Music Festival is expanding to match the scale of the company as a whole.

“While this year’s festival is very guitar-driven, we’re really excited about the variety we’ve still been able to cover,” says ATMF/Lincoln Hall’s Talent Buyer, Patrick Van Wagoner. “Attendees will find elements of rock ’n roll, punk, folk, pop, funk, and more, while seeing plenty of acts with Audiotree history.” Several artists are Audiotree Alumni that have recorded projects in the past, including Basement, Palm, Common Holly, Chicano Batman, Post Animal, NE-HI, Melkbelly, Stuyedeyed, and Flaural. Each festival performance will be live-streamed and later released as standalone videos.

2018’s biggest addition is The Discovery Stage, presented in conjunction with WMU’s radio station. “Our good friends at the Western Michigan University college radio station, WIDR, will be helping to present 12 more bands throughout the weekend,” says Adam Thurston. The Discovery stage lineup will feature additional Audiotree Alumni, along with local acts from Michigan and Chicago. More details will be announced next month.

In addition to music, the festival will offer a variety of craft beer, food trucks, and specialty vendors from the Kalamazoo area. The fest is all ages and children under the age of 10 get free admission with an adult. “We’re working with more local partners and sponsors than we ever have before,” says Thurston. “September 22nd and 23rd is going to be an epic weekend in downtown Kalamazoo!”

Live – King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Chicago, IL – June 10, 2018

“Intense,” “hot,” and “fucked up” were all phrases I heard used to describe the sold-out King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard show in Chicago on June 10th.  Fans were lined up down the block in hopes to get early access to the Riviera Theatre’s general admission area for the best spots to watch the show or be in the mosh pit.

It was a cool yet humid afternoon and evening.  Fog was high and thick in the city.  You couldn’t see the tops of most buildings.  It was a bit of a surreal image perfect for a psychedelic rock show.  I felt bad for a group of four guys who were asking one of the bouncers for any unclaimed tickets.  They’d driven all the way from Ohio and didn’t know the show was sold out until they arrived.

Unfortunately, I missed Amyl and the Sniffers, as my friend attending with the show with me had a late appointment, but we got in after she went through a near TSA-level search at the door.  We immediately noticed the heat in the place.  A lot of bodies were in there, and the humidity crept in from the streets and into the theatre.  Security was already hauling a sweat-soaked woman who could barely walk out of the stage area as we walked down the foyer.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard didn’t seem to feel the heat, however.  They only increased it.

The mosh pit started quick.  I didn’t get into this one.  There were so many people there that moving from our spot (between the downstairs bar and the sound booth) to the main floor and pit was nearly impossible.  My friend told me that a lot of the people already looked dehydrated and / or drunk and / or high, and she then remembered that the Spring Awakening electronic music festival had been happening in the city all weekend.  Many had decided to wrap up their weekend with Australian psychedelia after going crazy with dubstep and trance for three days.

King Gizzard ripped through “Lord of Lightning” and got a big reaction for “Rattlesnake”.  One of the high spots of the night for me was hearing a slightly aggressive version of “Sleep Drifter.”  It had an edge to it that you won’t hear on Flying Microtonal Banana.

The three tracks from Nonagon Infinity got a great response from the crowd, of course.  My friend was describing the show as “intense” by now.  She went to the restroom at one point and came back to tell me, “The real show’s out there (in the foyer).  Some girl is fucked up out there and they’re dragging her and other people outside.”  I made a break for the restroom at one point and discovered the humidity had turned the foyer floor and stairs down to the restroom into a Slip and Slide. I made it there and back without falling, but I’m not sure others were so lucky.

I was happy to see the four Ohio guys walk by me with drinks in their hands.  I clapped one on the shoulder and told him I was happy they made it into the show.  The whole crowd was buzzing, both naturally and through chemical means.  My friend was a bit freaked out by part of King Gizzard‘s projections that included a cartoon crocodile flying a biplane.  King Gizzard shows are always wild, and this one was no exception.

Catch them if you can while they’re in the U.S.

Washington, DC trio Flasher released their debut album, Constant Image (Domino), less than 2 weeks ago to stunning praise across the board. Today, the band shares a new video for their single “Who’s Got Time?,” a song about the souring of a relationship. The surreal video, directed by Adinah Dancyger, sees the three band members bound through the woods in hazmat suits, ultimately finding themselves. They’re currently on tour in support of Constant Image with Chicago friends Dehd.

Middle Waves Music Festival unveils first artists for their 2018 lineup.

Fort Wayne, Indiana’s Middle Waves Music Festival has released its first lineup announcement for 2018.  Some of the biggest standouts are Lizzo, Idles, and Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks.

Tickets are already on sale, and more artists are to be announced over the summer.  Middle Waves is a fun time.  The festival’s promoters are geniuses because the festival offers two free stages all weekend.  You can see close to 20 bands on these stages and it will cost you nothing.  The main stage is the only one that requires a paid admission.

Riot Fest announces first wave of 2018 lineup.

As usual, Chicago’s annual Riot Fest is the festival Lollapalooza used to be and now dreams of being.  Also as usual, the Riot Fest lineup is impressive.  This first wave announcement packs some wallops.  Beck, Interpol, Cypress Hill, Bad Religion, Clutch, Digable Planets, Gary Numan, Killing Joke, Wolfmother, and Bully are all worth your time.  Tickets are on sale, and layaway options are available, so don’t wait until the second wave announcement if you want to get in on this.

Levitation France adds new artists to 2018 lineup.

Levitation France has added a few more artists to their 2018 lineup.  The Soft Moon, Flavien Berger, J.C. Satan, Rendez-vous, Sextile, the Blank Tapes, and Prettiest Eyes are all now on the bill.  Tickets are still available for the festival and it should be lovely in Angers in mid-September.  I’m happy to see the Soft Moon on the bill, as they always put on a good show, and Flavien Berger is a rather good DJ / electro artist indeed.
