“this is music meant to be played at a volume walls can’t contain. Fuzz’s namesake is no joke, either — this is proto-metal, anvil-head blues-rock, thick like cement about to harden.” – NPR Music

Ty Segall‘s Freedom’s Goblin was a wild, freewheeling record mixing all sorts of influences ranging from angry punk to disco funk. His newest record, First Taste, is tighter, but no less chaotic.
The album opens with a weird hiss on “Taste,” a song about how our choices are often bad ones (“Our salivating makes it all taste worse.”), as Segall and his bandmate, Charles Moothart, lay down double drumming amid heavy synths. The synths get all wiggly on “Whatever” – a song that’s about a D/s relationship on its surface but I suspect is actually about being willing to do anything to salvage a relationship.
Strange percussion that sounds like shaken strings of seashells starts “Ice Plant,” an odd cut about the sun warming up a cold day in California. More cool double drumming opens “The Fall,” a wild track that I’m sure gets the mosh pit jumping whenever Mr. Segall plays it live. Segall has written songs about his dog before, so “I Worship the Dog” is another good entry to this batch of his songs. It has a cool buzz to it that might be from a kazoo patched through a distortion pedal for all I know.
Segall plays a bouzouki (Yes, you read that right.) on “The Arms” – a cool track that blends psychedelia with Eastern sounds. More of that sweet Segall-Moothart double drumming comes back for the quick instrumental “When I Met My Parents (Part 1).”
Segall keeps rocking that bouzouki on “I Sing Them” – a song about how his music helps him through self-expression, thus bringing him freedom. His lyrics of “All I got is what I’d say. So I don’t speak or talk or pray. I sing them. I sing my song so I am free. I sing my song and sound like me.” pretty much sum up how every artist feels about their work. Then, just to baffle you, Segall gives us the mostly instrumental (The sole lyrics are “Close your eyes. Everything is just dreaming.”) synth-wave jam “When I Met My Parents (Part 3).” Where’s Part 2? I don’t know.
“Radio” is another trippy track about the dissolution of the body and the embrace of a new light, although Segall’s lyrics of “I just want to sit and watch the new radio, watching people die all night long on the radio.” make me think it’s a cautionary tale of becoming enslaved to our phones. “Self Esteem” starts funky, devolves into avant-garde jazz madness, and then goes back into percussion-heavy funk. The album ends with the mandolin-drive “Lone Cowboys.” It’s almost like a sprint (towards death?) at the end of a race with its fast beats and lyrics like “…when you reach it, make sure it’s whole. When you feel it, you’re all alone.”
First Taste would be a great name for a debut album, but Ty Segall is well beyond his debut record. He’s prolific, to say the least. This album could be a first taste of other musical experimentation to come from him, and that’s a good thing.

“Our salivating makes it all taste worse,” croons Ty Segall in “Taste,” the lead single / video from his forthcoming album, First Taste, due August 2nd via Drag City. He’s talking about us: how we’re the masters of our own destiny, tellers of our own prophecy, makers of our own sickened choices. It’s a warning, but this time, the finger is pointing back at him too. He’s one with us. First Taste is an introspective set for Segall after the extroversions of 2018’s Freedom’s Goblin. Lines of struggle wind through the songs as Segall reflects on family, re-encountering pasts, anticipating futures. He skates through oneness, self-esteem, the parents – all the joys of a rain-filled childhood – while reaching outward in the here and now, feeling for a shared pulse.
Meanwhile, the production is far out! Segall’s creative juices suggested some radical (in the older sense of the word) new instrumental territories: koto, recorder, bouzouki, harmonizer, mandolin, saxophones and brass, voices, and a sprinkling of keys. Segall occupies the drumset whenever it’s heard on the left speaker, while Charles Moothart plays the kit on the right side. Segall’s vocal prowess sits in fresh relief against his mutant orchestra, spooling tension through some of his most patient songs, his feral scream in complete control. Whatever the mood is, the pedal is pushed cleanly to the metal — and that means to the max of the lightest ballads ever, OR through the most raging rocks yet. Segall’s song designs are all over the place, but unlike the freewheeling feast style of Freedom’s Goblin, these twelve numbers form a tightly revolving cycle of song and sound that focuses thoughts.
Ty Segall and the Freedom Band will bring their electrifying live shows to LA, NYC, and Europe later this year. During these residencies, Segall will play First Taste in full, alongside select albums from his expansive catalogue. All tour dates, including newly-announced support and specifics on which album Segall will be playing each night, are below.

In 2018, Ty Segall and the Freedom Band — Mikal Cronin, Charles Moothart, Emmett Kelly, and Ben Boye — stormed the world in support of Freedom’s Goblin, playing songs from Ty’s catalog in a series of ecstatic setlists. Each night, they sought freedom for themselves and the audience, even it if was just one night of emancipation from the world’s numbing chill. Then they went and did it again the next night! That blunt-force impact of The Freedom Band in full effect is being presented via Deforming Lobes, out March 29th via Drag City. Get a taste early with “Love Fuzz.”
Recorded live on stage at Los Angeles’ Teragram Ballroom via mobile unit onto two-inch tape and mixed at Electrical Audio with Steve Albini, Deforming Lobes updates (and upends) numbers from Melted, Emotional Mugger, Twins, Manipulator, $ingle$ 2 and Ty Segall. From the start, the “Warm Hands” suite shows the growth of the group since recording the original version for the 2017 Self-Titled album. The feeling between audience and band at those shows was its own special thing; here, the band is somehow even more front and center, exploring every song with an unrestrained curiosity and fervor, never forgetting the collective experience they’re sharing.
Following Freedom’s Goblin, the epic double-LP that took the heroic arc of Manipulator and wadded it up into a much more aerodynamic (and harder-hitting) ball, Deforming Lobes is the first original statement from The Freedom Band, bookending the Goblin experience with an exclamation point.

Ty Segall is a fan of music. He lives in Los Angeles, but has lived in San Francisco and Laguna Beach. Ty is obsessed with ceviche and loves being outside. He is 31 years old. For fun, he recorded a covers album of songs he loves. This includes songs by Amon Düül II, John Lennon, Sparks, War, Funkadelic, Rudimentary Peni, Grateful Dead, Spencer Davis Group, and more. Ty loves so many songs. This particular covers collection is called Fudge Sandwich, and the album art (see above) has a picture of a fudge sandwich on it. He hopes you like it. If you don’t, it’s ok because he really just made it for fun. Ty is currently taking his dog, Fanny, for a walk.
Fudge Sandwich is out October 26th on In The Red, right in the midst of his solo acoustic tour. (Fudge Sandwich is not a solo acoustic album.) The album is available for pre-order now at intheredrecords.com.

Ty Segall’s Goblin Phase One North American tour is just about over. Whoa. EPIC. Now that he and the Freedom Band have knocked the rust off cages all around the country, it must be time to get alone, right? Yeah man! For a couple weeks – then the European tour. So, alone time later in June, then? Sure, for a little minute. But then it’s time for the BEST kind of alone time – a solo acoustic tour. Just Ty, the guitar – and you. Sounds intimate, huh? Well, ol’ kid can work up a storm even with only six semi-unplugged strings at his disposal. Extra excitement will be churned by Ty doing all sorts of songs he doesn’t usually play. It’s gonna be great! Acoustically speaking, we can’t wait. Ty Segall goes acoustic! Coming in October.

Perennial rock workhorse Ty Segallis playing two shows at Levitation Austinthis year. The first is at the Stubb’s BBQ kick-off party on April 26th at 9:45pm and the second is the next night at Barracuda at 7pm. Both shows are sure to be loud and fun, as Mr. Segall is an energetic performer who can bounce around rock genres as easily as a kangaroo across the Australian outback. His new album, Freedom’s Goblin, is a great example of this as he blends fuzzed disco with songs about his dog.
It’s hard not to like an album that opens with a song about the lead singer’s dog.
That’s exactly what Ty Segalldoes on his newest record, Freedom’s Goblin, a sprawling double-album with rock riffs galore, wild horn sections, funk jams, new wave trips, ballads, and psychedelic freak-outs. The opening track, “Fanny Dog,” launches like a Polaris missile with a full brass accompaniment and Segall shredding his guitar like his dog probably shreds a stuffed animal.
Segall makes a hard right turn on “Rain,” which seems to reveal his admiration for Radioheadwith its simple piano chords, unadorned vocals, slightly warped horns (which are all over this record, really) and lyrics about pining for a lover. His cover of Hot Chocolate’s “Every 1’s a Winner” is outstanding, and one of the best covers anyone has put out in a couple years. Segall and his crew keep the funk but up the fuzz on it, and we’re all winners for it.Speaking of funk, the bass on “Despoiler of Cadaver” is downright slick, and the rest of the tune is a weird, disco / new wave fun zone.
“When Mommy Kills You” is appropriately hard-hitting. “My Lady’s on Fire” is a ballad that displays Segall’s love for 1960’s folk rock, and the saxophone solo on it immediately gets your attention. “Alta” is stadium rock brilliance. Want more cowbell? There’s plenty of it on the groovy “Meaning,” which blends hot beats with guitar freak-outs. “Cry Cry Cry” isn’t a cover of the Johnny Cash song, but it does sound like a nice salute to ELO‘s ballads. “Shoot You Up” is a slugging, chugging song that I think is about the dark side of the record industry, or fame, or both.
“You Say All the Nice Things” and “The Last Waltz” are two love songs, one about love in the now and one about a love lost to death. One of the longest tracks on the record, “She,” is a wild jam that would be appropriate for any lady wrestler’s entrance music or the theme song for any metal-loving dominatrix. “Talkin’ 3” is almost a free-form acid jazz session, but with a noise rock band playing at the same time. “The Main Pretender,” with its skronking, squealing saxophone by Mac DeMarco, was one of my top 10 singles of 2017. “I’m Free” gets back to Segall’s love of 1960’s folk, and “5 Ft. Tall” has some 1960’s power pop touches to it and then evolves into a garage rock fuzz-fest. The closer, “And, Goodnight,” is a twelve-minute psychedelic jam and a great finale.
As you can guess, Segall is all over the map on Freedom’s Goblin, but it all works. He’s created a record that embraces his many influences and is having a great time exploring all of them. It’s a treat for us as well.
Keep your mind open.

2017 was the first year in a long while when I bought singles and not just full albums or EP’s, so I thought I’d keep track of my favorites. Here’s the first half of the list!
#10 – Marlon Williams – “Vampire Again”
Not only does this song have the sexiest groove of the year, it also has a great backstory. Marlon Williams was bored on Halloween night in L.A. and noticed a local theatre was showing Nosferatu with a live orchestra performing music for the silent film. He got high, dressed up as a vampire, and went to the event only to discover he was the only one in costume. This is the story of that night.
#9 – Bebel Gilberto – “Creep” (live)
When my wife and I saw Bebel Gilberto in 2016, she played this song and mentioned that she was “thinking of releasing it.” “Please do!” I yelled from the middle of the amphitheater. She did, along with her wonderful EP Live at the Belly Up. This song makes me cry every time I hear it.
#8 – Honey – “Dream Come Now”
Honey‘s fiery single “Dream Come Now” was one of the most exciting tracks I heard all year. The opening guitar chaos made me immediately want to buy their album, New Moody Judy, which wasn’t available for another few months. It was well worth the wait.
#7 – Ty Segall – “The Main Pretender”
This wild, groovy bit of soul-punk from Ty Segall is jaw-dropping, especially with the wicked saxophone work from Mikal Cronin. This is like a lost Captain Beefheart track and a great example of Segall‘s love of multiple genres.
#6 – The Moonlandingz – “Black Hanz”
Weird, trippy, funky, and catchy, the Moonlandingzreleased “Black Hanz” and I was immediately hooked on them. The chorus roots into your head and the song warps into a crazy dream sequence at one point. It’s my favorite psychedelic track of the year.
