The video features a hideous adventurer fighting his way through a cavernous dungeon, slaying all manner of ghoulish beasts and monsters. Will he reach the castle and save the day? Also, as previous reported, OCS (featuring John Dwyer, Brigid Dawson, Tim Hellman, Paul Quattrone, Tom Dolas and a string section consisting of Heather Lockie, Eric Clarke and Emily Elkin) announced four shows, two in Los Angeles and two in San Francisco. Proceeds from both LA shows will benefit L.A. Kitchen and, in addition to Shannon Lay, Ty Segall was just added, performing solo acoustic. The SF shows will benefit the Coalition on Homelessness, and will also be supported by Ty Segall and Shannon Lay. After two years of worldwide success, unassuming Texan trio Khruangbin announce their highly anticipated second album, Con Todo El Mundo, out January 26, 2017 via DeadOceans. Continuing their world music pedigree, the band has expanded their global influences on this record from Thai funk to sounds of Spain and the Middle East, particularly Iran, from the 1960âs, 1970âs and beyond.
Formed of LauraLee on bass, MarkSpeer on guitar, and Donald âDJâ Johnson on drums, Khruangbinâs sounds have historically been rooted in the deepest waters of world music. Their 2015 debut album, The Universe Smiles Upon You, was heavily influenced by 60âs and 70âs Thai cassettes infused with classic soul, dub and psychedelia. This unusual mix created a powerful, hypnotic signature sound thatâs entranced listeners around the world.
Their second album, Con Todo El Mundo, takes its name not from a grand global idea, but from a simple one. Itâs in part dedicated to bassist Laura Leeâs Mexican-American grandfather, who was a big influence on her life. She says, “My grandpa would always ask me ‘Como me quieres?’ (how much do you love me?) And he’d only ever accept one response: ‘Con todo el mundo’ (with all the world). He created his own world to live in. Khruangbin is the world weâve created.â
Since the release of The Universe Smiles Upon You, Khruangbin have spent the past two years playing non-stop worldwide. The bandâs live history ranges from a European tour with FatherJohnMisty to supporting Tycho on a US tour, a string of festival dates including Glastonbury, Bonnaroo, ACL, OutsideLands, DesertDazed, SXSW as well as extended headline excursions. In a nod to their travels, Laura and Mark have been presenting a weekly âAirKhruangâDJsetlive each Friday on their Facebook page, where the pair play a selection of music by artists from a particular city. They also hold a monthly NTSradio show called âCabin Pressureâ.
The music video for the album’s first single, âMaria Tambien,â tells the story of Iranian women prior to the revolution of 1979, celebrating their creativity, freedom and ability to express themselves, and showing a side of women in the Middle East that often isn’t seen in the Western world.
The women in the video are all part of a large network of artists, singers, dancers and songwriters who have been either exiled or silenced since the revolution. With their new video, Khruangbin hopes to bring these remarkable women back into the spotlight and honor the artistry of silenced women everywhere.

The last time I saw horror / prog-rockers Goblin was in 2013 at Chicago’s Metro during their first tour of the United States.  It was a sold out show and one of the best I saw all year, so I was keen on catching them again on their “Sound of Fear” tour, especially since the lineup included four of the five original members – Massimo Morante, Maurizio Guarini, Fabio Pignaetti, and Agostino Marangolo (along with Aidan Zammit replacing keyboardist and founding member Claudio Simonetti).  They fact that they were playing in Thalia Hall – a former opera house – was a bonus.
Opening for them were the psychedelic / prog rockers Morricone Youth.  My friends and I arrived in time to catch the last two songs of their set.  Both were songs written as an alternate soundtrack to Night of the Living Dead.  The film played behind them as they rocked out and it was a great set-up for both Goblin and the Halloween season.
Goblin came out to a welcoming, albeit smaller than I expected, crowd. Â I have no idea why more people weren’t at the show, unless the midweek date had something to do with it. Â Regardless, Goblin came ready to play and to terrify.
They played a lot of stuff they didn’t play on their last tour, including tracks from the bizarre giallo film Beyond the Darkness (complete with grisly mortuary scenes playing behind them which might’ve made an intoxicated woman in front of us so woozy that she needed assistance leaving the main floor), another giallo Massimo Morante called Killer on the Train, and the bizarre alien invasion film Contamination.  I had no idea Goblin did the score for Contamination, so now I have extra incentive to track down that film.
Of course, they played tracks from their most famous film scores, starting with Profundo Russo (Deep Red).
They played not only the “Killer Doll” and main theme track, but also other songs from the film that you don’t hear often. Â They did the same with Tenebrae, which is a giallo about a killer in an opera house no less.
They did the same with their score to Suspiria, playing music from the beginning of the film and the creepy scene in which the lead characters first start to suspect an evil witch is living among them.
It was another excellent performance that got better as it crawled along like some horrible thing creeping out of the shadows. Â Goblin rarely get to the U.S., so don’t miss them.

London/Glasgow-based post-punk trio Shopping stay true to their minimal dance-punk ethos while âamping up the party vibeâ on their third full-length album, The Official Body, set for a January 19th release via FatCat Records. In conjunction with the album announcement, the band — Rachel Aggs (guitar, vocals), Billy Easter (bass, vocals) and Andrew Milk (drums, vocals) — share the video for the albumâs first official single, âThe Hype,â which “has them on display in all kinds of beautiful ages, shapes, and sizes” (The FADER). It’s a song about thinking for yourself, taking matters into your own hands and not listening to other people or institutions that try to take advantage and tell you what to think or how to be.
After the release of their debut album, Consumer Complaints, and follow up, 2015âs Why Choose, Shopping found themselves in an unrelenting cycle of touring. Meanwhile, in London, Power Lunches, a hub for the cityâs DIY scene and the bandâs usual rehearsal and writing space closed down. Upon returning from tour, Milk relocated to Glasgow. The distance added an element of pressure: âAs a band that only ever writes collaboratively, itâs essential for us to actually be together in the room before any songs start to formulate. It can be a little daunting when we all turn up, and we only have an afternoon to pull a song out of thin air.â Add to that a sprinkling of Brexit, Trump, a principally imploding world, and youâve got yourself The Official Body.
Recorded and produced over 10 days by Edwyn Collins at his Clashnarrow studio, The Official Body is an album in which the thematic gravitas contrasts with the bandâs evolving sound. âWe’ve always felt like what we do is political in that it’s cathartic and healing in some way, but at some point it just felt like making ‘political’ music was a bit like putting a tiny band aid on an enormous wound,â says Aggs as she describes the sense of disorientation that lies at the foundation of the album. While it may have been tempting to adopt a more serious tone, Shopping remained humorous in their approach â the albumâs title, The Official Body, is a play on the idea of official bodies of power and control, âthe mystical powers that beâ as Easter deems them, as well as the construct of a physical body that fits within the societal paradigm of what is âacceptable.â
Shopping will tour the UK and Europe this November. Theyâll make their way stateside in early 2018, including performances at SXSW.

October 20th saw the release of Lindstrømâs fifth solo album and first since 2012, Itâs Alright Between Us As It Is, via Smalltown Supersound. Presented as one continuous stream of nine interlocked tracks, Itâs Alright Between Us As It Is aggregates all the best elements of the Norwegian producerâs long and varied career: the Balearic free-disco excursions of his two albums with Prins Thomas, cosmic voyages in the vein of Where You Go I Go Too, and shimmering electronic pop, remindful of 2010’s Real Life Is No Cool. After presenting singles, âShininâ feat. Grace Hall and âTensions,â Lindstrøm now shares âBungl (Like A Ghost)â featuring Jenny Hval.  As one of three guest voices on the album alongside the aforementioned Hall and Frida Sundemo, Hvalâs âcreepy, cut-up vocals usher in a potently psychedelic third actâ (Uncut).
Hval comments, “I recorded some vocals over this little baroque piece, and for some reason I felt like I was invading it, or haunting it. I felt like the ghost voice from classic literature. Then later Lindstrøm stretched out to a sweeping disco manifesto for the cemetery – at least that was the feeling I got when I heard the finished version. I guess recorded music can always be described as human remains. Songs contain parts of us that no longer exist, but managed to inscribe themselves into a recording before they moved on.”
As described by Lindstrøm, âThis track is the glue to the album, and if it wasnât for âBungl,â the album would not have happened. Jennyâs contribution transformed an unfinished idea into something really special.â

Ty Segall reaches deep down into his deep bag of rocks and pulls out an uptempo dance number, an armload of guitars and a hardcore jam, urging us ultimately to jailbreak from the self-imposed thought prison we’ve all been raised in. No, tonight’s not the night, do it now! DenĂŠe Segall‘s lead vocals hammer home “Meaning” with unbridled strength: “I see fear in freedom…” Is this what’s holding us back? Ask yourself, man!

I rarely buy an album based on a single track, but Honeyâs new album, New Moody Judy, was an exception to the rule. I heard the first single, âDream Come Now,â and thought, âDamn, I need to hear more of these cats.â and then pre-ordered the record.
It was a wise decision. New Moody Judyâs opener, âWage Agreement,â blares out of your speakers with a wild mix of Stooges and Mudhoney influences. The guitars are loud, fuzzed, and urgent. âUrgentâ might by the best word to describe the entire record, really. Every song wants to grab you by the arm and shake you until you snap out of it (whatever âitâ is for you).
The sharp angles and explosive drums of âDream Come Nowâ could power a rocket to the moon, or the scrawniest person to knock down someone three times as big as them. The title track throws in dashes of cosmic stoner rock and Nick Cave vocal styling. âSpeed, Glueâ isnât, Iâm sure, about people who can stick things to other things in a quick manner. The fuzzy bass and warped guitars are at the forefront of this amazing instrumental.
âHungryâ almost spins out of control with heavy bass, avalanche drums, and crazy guitar that sounds like something youâd hear on an out of control UFO. The bandâs Mudhoney influence is front and center on âBagman,â which sounds like something Mudhoney mightâve unleashed on a Seattle barâs dilapidated stage in 1992. That means itâs a killer rock track, by the way. âPowerâ brings back the Stooges influence and MC5 touches as well. It never lets up from the first chord, which is the type of rock we need right now. The closer is âPeggy Rayâ – a fierce garage-punk assault that youâll want to play during your next free-run, skate, or even casual stroll around town.
This is one of the best rock records Iâve heard all year. I need to see these cats live. You need to see these cats live, and we all need this record.
