Dave Depper drops second single from upcoming solo album.

DAVE DEPPER (OF DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE) SHARES “COMMUNICATION”

DEBUT ALBUM, EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUE,
OUT JUNE 9TH ON TENDER LOVING EMPIRE

“…a cloud of weightless synths anchored by a danceably funky bass groove.”
Stereogum on “Do You Want Love?”
Dave Depper, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist for Death Cab for Cutie, is excited to share “Communication,” a new song from his forthcoming debut solo album, Emotional Freedom Technique, out June 9th on Tender Loving Empire. The single, which premiered earlier this morning via Uproxx, is a perfect representation of the album as a whole: amidst intertwining minimal drum patterns and warm, melodic synthesizers, “Communication” addresses the strain and toll distance, along with a life on the road, brings to relationships. Depper says:

Musically, “Communication” began the day after Prince passed away. I decided to a pay a small musical tribute to the man by attempting to create my own minimalist funk song in the Minneapolis style, hence the LinnDrum beat and sparse instrumentation. The whole thing came together in a couple of hours.

At the time, I was in a long distance relationship with a woman that had, as those things so often do, devolved into communicating almost exclusively over text messages and social media. Conversations would abruptly end, only to be resurrected hours or even days later. The more we seemed to communicate using only blue bubbles of text, the less real she seemed to me. It dawned on me that this was not communication at all, just a facsimile of real interaction. I poured my frustration into the track I was working on, and the song wrote itself from there.
If you’re in the Pacific Northwest, don’t miss Depper’s two special album release shows: Wed. June 21st at Barboza in Seattle and Thu. June 22nd at Mississippi Studios in Portland. Tickets for both are on-sale now.

FLASHER SHARE NEW SONG, “BURN BLUE,” OFF UPCOMING 7″

“WINNIE” B/W “BURN BLUE” OUT 5/5 ON SISTER POLYGON

The Washington D.C. trio Flasher have quietly begun to build a powerful name for themselves. After a successful trip to Austin for SXSW, garner praise from all who saw the band’s tightly coiled and acerbic performances, they are sharing “Burn Blue,” the B-side to their recent single, “Winnie.” The 7″ will be released on May 5th via Sister Polygon.

Flasher is Taylor Mulitz (guitar, vocals), Daniel Saperstein (bass, vocals), and Emma Baker (drums, vocals). Long-time friends, they are also established members of Washington, D.C.’s re-emergent DIY music scene, with Mulitz being a member of Priests, Saperstein of Bless, and Baker of Big Hush. Flasher continues to explore new territory with every new song they share. “Burn Blue is about trauma and time,” says Multiz. “It’s about trying to stay present while melting with memory.” Listen and see their upcoming tour dates below.

PRAISE FOR “WINNIE” & S/T EP

“Flasher offer seven impressively-honed songs that speak to selfhood and sublimation.” – Pitchfork on s/t EP

“A subtle critique of American consumerism and media hysteria that’s never heavy-handed. It kind of just sounds like what it feels like to stare at a screen with a billion tabs open at a time. Oh! And it’s also just a really good punk song.” – Stereogum on “Winnie”, 5 Best Songs of the Week

“The source material may not be chaotic, but the song certainly is — such is Flasher’s transformative beauty.” – CLRVYNT on “Winnie”

“A cutting social satire with riffs à la J Mascis, “Winnie” is equal parts intellectual and endearing.” – BULLETT on “Winnie”

Steve Gunn announces 2017 summer tour.

STEVE GUNN ANNOUNCES SUMMER TOUR DATES IN SUPPORT OF EYES ON THE LINES

SOLO CO-HEADLINE DATES IN JUNE WITH LEE RANALDO & FULL BAND DATES IN JULY

After a banner year in 2016, with the release of Eyes on the Lines, his new album and debut for Matador, Steve Gunn is preparing to hit the road this summer for a slew of North American tour dates. For those not lucky enough to see Gunn and Lee Ranaldo’s intimate co-headline tour earlier this year, the pair will play dates this June throughout the south and along the east coast. After a quick run of shows in Australia, Gunn and his full band, The Outliners, will return for select dates up the west coast, wrapping up with a performance at Pickathon in early August. All tickets are on-sale this Friday.

Eyes on the Lines sees Gunn’s songwriting at its most vibrant and evocative, fully embracing a sense of uncertainty and adventure that comes with getting lost out on the road; “propulsive, rolling, repetitive in deliberate ways, and insomuch as it conjures a single image it’s of smooth and endless blacktop, receding in a rearview mirror.” (The New Yorker). The album has been met with acclaim from the likes of NPR Music, Pitchfork, Vulture, Noisey, WIRED, Brooklyn Magazine, INTERVIEW, The Guardian, Paste, and beyond.

FUSSELL TO SUPPORT JOAN SHELLEY ON SUMMER TOUR

[What In The Natural World album art; painting by Roger Brown]
“Achingly beautiful…a record that yields a procession of hidden treasures. Fussell has an uncanny ability to illuminate the present by propping up a window against the past. Whatever the raw material’s vintage, the protagonist’s pursuit of abstract notion – freedom, empowerment, danger, fulfillment – is every inch as pertinent today.” –Uncut (9/10)

“It’s difficult to imagine another contemporary interpreter delivering a tale of desperation and sadness with such tenderness, warmth, and grace. Jake Xerxes Fussell is a national treasure.” –Aquarium Drunkard

“Fussell freely adapts early American roots music, teasing out new melodic subtleties and overseeing small-band arrangements that bring crystalline folk-rock glow to decades-old songs.” –Chicago Reader

“Jake Xerxes Fussell, the otherworldly guitar player, has an innate ability to infuse traditional folk songs and older works with a revived sense of purpose, a freshly calibrated compass.” –FLOOD
Jake Xerxes Fussell’s second full-length album, What in the Natural World, is out today via Paradise of Bachelors and now available to stream and download in full.

Alongside the release of the album, Oxford American has featured the Durham, North Carolina singer and guitarist with a special emphasis on the fifth track, “Bells of Rhymney.” This arcane coal miner’s lament shares its text, by Welsh poet Idris Davies, with the song popularized by Pete Seeger and the Byrds, complete with personified, protesting bells, but here Jake supplies his own gospel-tinged musical setting.

I lived in Mississippi for about ten years and several years before I left I was playing music a lot with this guy Reverend John Wilkins (who is a Memphis-based Gospel musician). His father is Robert Wilkins, who recorded back in the twenties as a blues singer and later as a gospel musician. So I had to really familiarize myself with that sort of ‘guitar evangelism.’ The approach that I’m using in ‘Bells of Rhymney’ is straight out of that idiom.”

—Jake Xerxes Fussell as told to Oxford American

Fussell will head out on a spring UK and EU tour co-headlining with Daniel Bachman, followed by a summer US tour in support of Joan Shelley (full list of dates below). He will celebrate the album release with a full-band performance (featuring fellow PoB artist Nathan Bowles and Casey Toll of Mt. Moriah) at the Nightlight in Chapel Hill today, March 31, supported by Asheville guitarist Sarah Louise and Carolina Soul DJs.

She-Devils’ debut album out May 19th.

She-Devils Announce Debut Album
Out May 19th Via Secretly Canadian

Listen To The New Single, “Hey Boy”
https://soundcloud.com/secretlycanadian/she-devils-hey-boy-2

U.S. Tour Dates Announced;
Including Northside Festival

“intimate, dusty hybrid pop that searches for cosmic meaning in vintage sounds” – The FADER
“She-Devils…are creating a new way forward for tape looping. The group…dive into the souls of the samples they use, possessing them and finding otherworldly new emotions.” – Pitchfork
“She-Devils evoked the ’70s and ’80s electro-punk minimalism of Suicide and Soft Cell with an austere but riveting presentation.” – Chicago Tribune
She-Devils are excited to announce their self-titled debut album on Secretly Canadian out May 19th. Along with the announcement, they’re sharing a brand new single titled “Hey Boy.” The song fuses surf guitar with swirling sonics from Kyle Jukka and Audrey Ann Boucher’s preternatural voice. “Hey Boy” follows the recent single, “The World Laughs,” with its accompanying video directed by the band themselves who recently wrapped a successful SXSW.

Through primitive electronic gear, hypnotist vocals, and an “amusement park of sounds,” She-Devils construct a fun-house world of beautiful chaos. The music is built from original sonics inspired by everything from Iggy Pop to Madonna to T-Rex to Can, as well as the romantic longing of ‘60s yé-yé.

The pair met four years ago while living at a music rehearsal space in the Mile-Ex neighborhood of Montreal. The band played gigs for about eight months though they did not record right away. Making music together meant creating their own rules and taking things one-step at a time. Following instinct is a crucial part of She-Devils’ identity.

Striving to make music that feels “as visual as possible,” the band hopes to strap listeners into a rollercoaster ride “with Audrey’s voice as the centrepiece to cling to.” The duo are inspired by the cinema and art of Gregg Araki, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, John Waters and Quentin Tarantino. They direct their own videos. Audrey creates the artwork that accompanies the music. Her self-taught style evolved by watching hours of Disney movies, The Simpsons and Powerpuff Girls.

Audrey is also musically self-taught. In fact, she had never even played music before forming She-Devils. “I’ve always seen music from the perspective of an artist or music lover rather than that of a musician,” she explains. “When I sing over a loop, I don’t feel like I’m in control of what I do, or that I am cerebrally engaged with making music, it’s more like my subconscious is completely taking over my mind and it just comes out of my dreams.”

With She-Devils, the duo have created a channel to explore the sensory world, actualize aesthetic fantasies and alchemize pieces of history into entirely new sensations.

Moon Duo releases second single from upcoming album.

MOON DUO SHARE NEW SINGLE, “SEVENS,” OFF OCCULT ARCHITECTURE VOL. 2
OUT MAY 5TH ON SACRED BONES

https://soundcloud.com/sacredbones/moon-duo-sevens/

“if first single ‘Lost In Light’ is any indication, it’ll be an absolutely gorgeous stargazer of a record.”
– Stereogum

Leading to the release of Moon Duo’s Occult Architecture Vol. 2Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamadapresent new single, “Sevens.” Sanae’s ethereal vocals and the cleanliness of the mix make this one of the most immediate and, dare we say, poppiest songs Moon Duo have released to date. Ripley’s supreme shredding throughout leads the way from the depths of winter into the brightness of spring.
The Occult Architecture of Moon Duo’s fourth album is an intricately woven hymn to the invisible structures found in the cycle of seasons and the journey of day into night, dark into light. Offering a cosmic glimpse into the hidden patterning embedded in everything, Occult Architecture reflects the harmonious duality of these light and dark energies through the Chinese theory of Yin and Yang. Following the Yin (darkness, night, earth) represented on Vol. 1Vol. 2 presents the Yang. Yang means “the bright side of the hill” and is associated with the sun, light and the spirit of heaven. As such, Vol. 2explores the light and airy elements of Moon Duo’s complex psyche.

Moon Duo’s Occult Architecture Vol. 2 is out May 5th via Sacred Bones. Following the February release of Vol. 1, the band is currently touring Europe. They’ll return stateside for a spring tour throughout the Midwest and east coast, including a collaborative set with Jim Jarmusch at the Sacred Bones 10 Year Anniversary show on May 20th in Brooklyn.

Slowdive’s first album in 22 years due out May 5th.

SLOWDIVE ANNOUNCE SLOWDIVE, FIRST NEW ALBUM IN 22 YEARS,
OUT MAY 5TH VIA DEAD OCEANS

WATCH VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE, “SUGAR FOR THE PILL”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxwAPBxc0lU

LIVE STREAM SURPRISE LONDON SHOW TOMORROW AT 4:10PM EASTERN

UK shoegaze pioneers Slowdive are pleased to announce their self-titled fourth album, out May 5th via Dead Oceans, and the beautifully understated new single, “Sugar For The Pill, which follows the release of “Star Roving.” Additionally, Slowdive announce a live stream of a surprise show tomorrow, March 29th, at London’s The Garage, the venue in which the band played their final London show in their original incarnation in December 1993. The stream will go live at 4:10pm Eastern here: facebook.com/slowdive.

Slowdive’s stargazing alchemy is set to further entrance the faithful while beguiling a legion of fresh ears. These eight new tracks, simultaneously expansive and the band’s most direct material to date, deftly swerve away from any “trip down memory lane.” They were birthed at the band’s talismanic Oxfordshire haunt, The Courtyard, and mixed at Los Angeles’ famed Sunset Sound by Chris Coady (Beach House). Throughout, the group dynamic was all-important. “When you’re in a band and you do three records, there’s a continuous flow and a development. For us, that flow re-started with us playing live again and that has continued into the record,” notes principal songwriter Neil Halstead.

The video for “Sugar For The Pill,” produced by in/out, takes its inspiration from the Slowdive album artwork which is itself a still from Harry Smith’s cult classic animation Heaven and Earth Magic – the vast spiritual narrative that has influenced so many artists since it was originally released back in 1957.

Slowdive is Neil Halstead (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Christian Savill (guitar), Nick Chaplin (bass), Rachel Goswell (vocals) and Simon Scott (drums, electronics). Their debut album, Just For A Day, was released in 1991 by Creation Records and was followed by the band’s now revered 1993 album Souvlaki and 1995’s Pygmalion before they disbanded. In the 22 years of their virtual disappearance, compilation albums have been released and the core members of the group have gone on to join other musical endeavours. In 2014, the band announced that they’d reunited and more new music would follow.

Formed in 1976, The Damned really need no introduction… As well as releasing the first ever British punk single and album, they also broke further new ground as the first UK punk act to tour America. Cited as one of the most influential punk groups of all time, they also contributed vastly to the gothic rock genre and influenced an entire generation of future hardcore punk bands such as Black Flag and Bad Brains, with their fast paced energetic playing style and attitude, as well as heavyweights such as Green Day and Guns ’N’ Roses (the latter acknowledged the debt when they covered “New Rose” on their 1993 album, ‘The Spaghetti Incident’). Along with the Sex Pistols and The Clash, the Damned helped spearhead the punk movement in the UK and they continue to wave the flag for originality, stick two fingers up to mediocrity and celebrate a DIY punk ethos in the face of plastic entertainment and scripted reality, four decades and ten albums later (and still on the road).
The band’s hugely influential classic debut single, New Rose‘, celebrated its 40th anniversary last November with a limited edition 7” release via BMG. Featuring original artwork, picture disc and exclusive fold out poster, it’s a must have collectable release of one of the most influential records of all time. Their classic debut long-player, ‘Damned Damned Damned(the very first British punk album), was originally released by Stiff Records on February 18th 1977 and, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the band’s dramatic breakthrough, BMG also released a very special Art Of The Album: Deluxe Edition of that incredible debut album on February 17th, almost exactly 40 years to the day since its original issue.
David Vanian, Captain Sensible, Monty Oxymoron, Andrew ‘Pinch’ Pinching, and Stu West headed into the studio this winter to start work on a brand new album, their first since 2008’s ‘So, Who’s Paranoid?‘ A pre-order link for the CD, colored vinyl, as well as exclusive merch (and experiences) is available at PledgeMusic.  Stay tuned for more info.
Currently on an extensive world tour, which includes a two month North American run beginning April 6th in Los Angeles, they will also play a series of UK festivals this summer (check the band’s website for details).
See The Damned live – it will be a night out that you will remember for a very long time…

…a rage of rude bamalama and embedded pop-song smarts that, with time and sense, now sounds as consistent and fundamental as the Clash and Sex Pistols hymnals.” Rolling Stone
The Damned are a band of infinite depth and a wide variety of pleasures. Their catalog includes high-quality blurs of melodic punk, Beach Boys-ish flowery psych-pop, chiming, bittersweet post-punk, Moody Blues-ish bombastmopherics, spiraling goth and soaring faux soul, all brilliantly executed…With their predilection for both massive power and chaos and highly developed and subtle songwriting, they continue to be an effective and dramatic touring act, to this day.”  New York Observer
“The show was anything but a by the numbers nostalgia fest….The Damned delivered a performance that would leave many bands half their age in jealous awe.” Concert Addicts
“The Damned are 40 this year and still punk as fuck. Or goth as fuck. Or something in between that was never quiet the Ramones or Bauhaus, but Dave Vanian dressed like a vampire and Captain Sensible wore gonzo plaid. Something for every counterculture.” Diabolique Magazine
“For a band in their 40th year, The Damned surprisingly still have more energy than many groups half their age. Founding members singer Dave Vanian and guitarist Captain Sensible are all over the stage, moving almost constantly as they work their way through one song after another.” Chunky Glasses
“…across two sets, the band — which still features vampiric vocalist Dave Vanian and guitarist Captain Sensible — worked their way backwards, more or less, through their entire catalogue, delivering most of their best-loved songs along the way. Vanian’s voice is still in top form, and Captain Sensible provided the riffs and comic relief. Fantastic show.” Brooklyn Vegan
