Steve Hauschildt releases “Alienself” from album due this August.

STEVE HAUSCHILDT SHARES “ALIENSELF
OFF UPCOMING ALBUM DISSOLVI

GHOSTLY INTERNATIONAL DEBUT OUT AUGUST 3

Today, electronic musician Steve Hauschildt shares “Alienself,” the second song off his new full-length and Ghostly International debut, Dissolvi (out August 3rd). “Alienself is a song that began in my live set and so I had the luxury of developing it gradually over the last two years,” says Hauschildt. “The final version features guitar by Rafael Irisarri in the first half of the track which then transitions into synthesized voices in the latter half. The song title refers to a psychoanalytical term which has to do with the development of a false aspect of the self and how mental states are not only envisioned in others but how they’re externalized or projected.”

The album’s title — a reference to cupio dissolvi, the Latin phrase meaning “I wish to be dissolved” — needn’t be taken one-dimensionally or as purely solipsistic. Physiological phenomena are of interest to Hauschildt. These back-of-mind ruminations find their way out. Songs are cerebral in orientation, but beyond explanation, the music is truly visceral.

Late last month, Steve shared the first single off the record, the sublime “Saccade,” which featured vocals from Julianna Barwick. The album, which is his most collaborative work to date, also features a song with Gabrielle Herbst, aka GABI.  Watch visuals for “Alienself” and “Saccade” below (art by Robert Beatty).

Howard release “Oh Dear Brother” from album due this September.

Howard Share “Oh Dear Brother” From New Album, Together Alone, Out September 14th On Fashion People
https://soundcloud.com/listentohoward/oh-dear-brother/

As the song starts out, Howard mixes a folksy riff with a choppy syncopated beat. When the horn section comes in, the song transforms into a rounded out, funk groove. This is the first album from Howard to be recorded with a full band, and the extra instrumentation adds full-bodied warmth, helping the song blossom.” — Stereogum, on “Oh Dear Brother”

“The video’s kitschy collage-style animation, as well as the zany, exaggerated expressions of the band’s characters, elevate the classic outsider-falls-for-girl narrative into something refreshing and whimsical.” — NPR Music, on “Your Honor” video
Today, Howard are thrilled to share, “Oh Dear Brother,” the newest single from their forthcoming album Together Alone, out September 14th on Fashion People. “The song started more personally and gradually became more about the political state of affairs when things were coming to a climax around the election,” says guitarist/vocalist Howard Feibusch. “It is about our growing inability to listen to each other and the sense of turmoil that happens when our dialogue becomes a screaming match. It is not a topic I’m entirely comfortable writing about because I fear that it’s just polluting the atmosphere with more noise on a topic too many people have an opinion about.”

Together Alone follows Howard’s debut album, 2015’s Religion, and it’s companion EP, Please Recycle. It’s the first album from 30-year-old multifaceted bandleader Howard Feibusch’s project to be recorded with the full band — composed of Feibusch (guitar, vocals), Alex Chakour (guitar, synth, backup vocals), Myles Heffernan (bass), and Chris Holdridge (drums) — that so capably toured behind Religion. It’s also an aching, restless, and altogether lovely document of the paradoxical sensation in which we feel more isolated than ever in the face of increasing togetherness and connectivity—a modern sentiment wrapped in music that’s timeless in its timbre.

“Flat out it’s one of the best heavy psych debut albums you’ll hear in 2018.” — The Obelisk
“This quartet has been burning up stages all around their hometown, fueled by their abrasive blend of doom metal, psych rock, goth and a tangy soupçon of pop music… They landed a spot on the 2018 Best New Band poll in alt-weekly Willamette Week, but could quickly take over the world.” — Paste Magazine
“They mesh elements of doom, Krautrock and atmospheric indie into one bewitching rock whole.” –Classic Rock Magazine

Their self-titled RidingEasy Records debut has received unanimous press praise and continues to grow. Brooklyn Vegan recently streamed the entire album HERE. (Direct YouTube.)
The notion of “heavy music” is continuing to expand of late, with many intrepid artists finding new ways to incorporate the power of traditional metal into new music, but without all of its trappings. Enter Portland, OR quartet BlackWater HolyLight to further swirl musical elements into a captivating hybrid of emotional intensity. Heavy psych riffs, gothic drama, folk-rock vibes, garage-sludge and soaring melodies all collide into a satisfying whole with as much contrast as the band’s name itself.
“I wanted to experiment with my own version of what felt ‘heavy’ both sonically and emotionally,” says founder and vocalist/bassist Allison (Sunny) Faris. “I also wanted a band in which vulnerability of any form could be celebrated.” BlackWater HolyLight — Faris, guitarist/vocalist Laura Hopkins, drummer Cat Hoch and synth player Sarah Mckenna — formed upon the breakup of Faris’ longtime band and she sought a fresh start. “In my last band I was the only female in a group of 6, so I wanted to see how my song writing and vulnerability could glow taking the drivers seat and working with women.”
The band’s self-titled debut begins with a simple, almost grunge-like riff as a chorus of voices introduce a melodic line in call-and-response until the band kicks in, slowly building into crescendo like a lost outtake from Led Zeppelin‘s Houses of the Holy. Elsewhere, “Sunrise” begins with a chorus-drenched post-punk groove until a sonic boom of heavily distorted guitar skree erupts out of nowhere. Nearly as suddenly, the song returns to its lulling core, subtly building the tension until it ruptures completely in a blast of noise. Likewise, “Carry Her” establishes a dark, sparse melody and distinctly thin sounding drums not far removed from early work of The Cure. However, BlackWater HolyLight’s penchant for surprise attack finds a sudden shift into a doom-like dirge, colored with eerie synth notes and pounding shards of fuzz. Throughout the album, their songs shirk traditional verse-chorus-verse structure in favor of fluid, serpentine compositions that move with commanding grace. The band expertly, yet subconsciously, incorporates hints of Chelsea Wolfe, Celebration, Captain Beefheart, The Raincoats, The Stooges, Pink Floyd, Jane’s Addiction and more to form their unique brand of dark’n’heavy transcendence..
BlackWater HolyLight was recorded by Cameron Spies at Gold Brick Studios and The Greenhouse, and with Eric Crespo at Touch Tourcher Recording in Portland. The album is available on LP, CD and download, released April 6th, 2018 via RidingEasy Records on LP & CD at www.ridingeasyrecs.com and digital at blackwaterholylight.bandcamp.com.

Today marks a very special day. It is the day that a larger American audience is introduced to Japanese sensations CHAI. Fusing sonic elements of artists like Basement Jaxx, Gorillaz, CSS, and Tom Tom Club, with lyrics focused on self-empowerment and re-defining the definition of “kawaii,” or cute in Japanese, CHAI have amassed a devoted following in their home country. Those lucky enough to catch them on their all-too-brief visits to the US around SXSW understand what those on the other side of the globe already know: CHAI are incredibly special and should probably be the biggest band in the world.

On September 7th, Burger Records is pleased to physically reissue CHAI’s debut album, PINK, appearing in the US on vinyl, CD, and cassette for the first time. Additionally CHAI (identical twins Mana and Kana and former school classmate Yuna and Yuuki) will come to the US for their first-ever headlining show in New York and will return to Los Angeles later this year. Dates and venues are listed below; tickets go on sale Friday, June 22nd, at 10AM EST.

To give you an idea of what is in store, check out the amazing video for “N.E.O.” (which is well on its way to 2 million views), as well as an incredible live performance for a YouTube Music Session. Additionally, watch the videos for “Boyz Seco Men” and “I’m Me,” but be warned, this might spur a CHAI Youtube hole from which you may never extricate yourself.

A Place To Bury Strangers released their new album, Pinned, earlier this year via Dead Oceans. Today, they announce Re-Pinned, a remix record coming out October 5th via Dead Oceans. Re-Pinned features remixes from Slowdive, Trentemøller, No Age, METZ, Eric Copeland, Roly Porter, Davy Drones, and TBO. “We’re so thrilled to be able to curate this remix record,” explains Oliver Ackermann. “Re-Pinned has such a cool mix of bands we’re friends and fans of and musicians we’ve loved for years. It really helps paint a picture of where Pinned descended from and is a nice combination of our peers and influences.

It is also such a dream come true and an honor to have our label mates Slowdive remix ‘Frustrated Operator,” which is being shared today. “Slowdive was such an influence on A Place To Bury Strangers as there really is no artist that does epic, scary and beautiful soundscapes like them. In fact, this band started when my friends Tim and Dave were asking if I wanted to play drums in a band that sounds like Slowdive. So, there it is set in stone as it has come full circle! I can die now,” continues Ackermann.

The vinyl version of Re-Pinned will be available for purchase at A Place To Bury Strangers’ live dates leading up to its release, including next month’s performance in New York City with Os Mutantes and the subsequent European tour. Upon the release of Re-Pinned, A Place To Bury Strangers will tour North America starting October 6th. A full list of dates is below.

The Rungs release fun dream-pop single – “Trees”

The Rungs premiere “Trees” video, announce forthcoming EP
Brooklyn, NY indie pop trio a la The Cardigans, The Bird and The Bee, Blondie, Chvrches
Watch & share “Trees” video (YouTube) (PopMatters)

“Delightfully askance pop music which calls to mind the easy, innocent pop of the Bird & The Bee (and by extension Inara George) and the grin-inducing sounds of the Cardigans. ‘Trees’ flits by in the blink of an eye, leaving behind an infectious melody that is as inspiring as it is memorable.” — PopMatters
“Indie/dream-poppy, bouncy, high-tempo and unafraid to playfully change up its own sound every few seconds. This song is so fun.” — Little Indie Blogs
Brooklyn, NY trio The Rungs premiere the charming video for the lead single off of their forthcoming Everyday Visions EP today via PopMatters. Watch and share “Trees” HERE. (Direct YouTube.)
After recording what was going to be their second EP in 2015, indie-pop band The Rungs scrapped it, created a home studio, and started over from scratch. Now set to release later this summer, the 5-song EP Everyday Visions contains vibrant synth melodies, imaginative vocals, inventive guitar riffs, and a healthy dose of experimentation.
The band, which started as a music therapy project for Mandy Gurung, (vocals, songwriting, guitar, production) by husband Diwas Gurung, (guitar, production, songwriting) grew from a duo to a trio over the course of recording the EP, adding their neighborhood friend Steven Bartashev on drums. In addition to playing in The Rungs, all three members actively collaborate with other artists, frequently producing and recording them in their home studio. With Everyday Visions, the band offers a collection of playful and moody songs inspired by the sounds and stories that surround them in Brooklyn NY.
Everyday Visions will be available for download on August 17th, 2018. Pre-orders are available HERE.

Bjorn Torske releases neo-disco single – “Gata.”

BJØRN TORSKE SHARES NEW SINGLE “GATA”

BYEN OUT JULY 6TH VIA SMALLTOWN SUPERSOUND

Photo Credit – Einar Broch Johnsen
“[Clean Air’s] gently ascending chords send the song above the clouds,
but Torske’s slowly unfurling piano fills and electric keyboard solos cast a pensive air.
It speaks to Torske’s unmatched knack for making disco that’s not just body-moving
but thought-provoking: With ‘Clean Air’ the father of Norwegian nü-disco shoots
us up into a stratospheric headspace.” — Pitchfork
Next week sees the release of Bjørn Torske’s fifth solo album and first in eight years, Byen, out July 6th via Smalltown Supersound. Byen marks the 20-year anniversary of Torske’s solo career. Recorded over the past year at his home and studio in Bergen, Byen finds the veteran musician fusing two distinct sides of his catalog—clubby, inviting house music, and side-long pastoral ambience. It continues to show his flair for fusing indelible melody with propulsive rhythms.

After sharing lead single “Clean Air,” Torske presents “Gata,” a funky yet serene disco romp primed for the dancefloor. As described by Torske, “While Byen means ‘The City’ in Norwegian, ‘Gata’ means ‘The Street.’ This is where the youth of my early years in Tromsø had to spend their evenings since there was no place for them to go. But ‘gata’ is also a Rumanian word meaning ‘ready’ or ‘prepared,’ as in ‘let’s go,’ which to me fits just as well or even better than the title’s original meaning.”

Clutch releases “How to Shake Hands” from upcoming album.

CLUTCH RELEASE SECOND SINGLE TRACK
FROM THE NEW ALBUM “BOOK OF BAD DECISIONS”
Maryland rockers CLUTCH have released the second single from their upcoming album Book of Bad Decisions as an instant gratification track at iTunes (https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/book-of-bad-decisions/1376829212&app=itunes) and Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CNYD1R7).  Spotify has it here (http://open.spotify.com/album/0uWlwy6wHD7tGV3FfiVBF0)
In addition, a very limited 7” Picture Disc in a transparent PVC pocket hit stores on June 22nd. “How To Shake Hands” is on the blue side and “Gimme The Keys” on the reverse, green side.
Clutch’s song “How to Shake Hands” traces its lineage back to Ry Cooder and John Lee Hooker via the song “John Lee Hooker for President”.  In that song Ry Cooder impersonates JLH giving a stump speech on what will happen when he becomes President.  Clutch’s original idea of covering the Ry Cooder song was soon abandoned as vocalist Neil Fallon said he couldn’t do the song justice.  Instead, Neil put his own lyrics in the style of Ry Cooder/JLH to a new Clutch song which ended up becoming the fast-paced “How to Shake Hands”.
Each of the single releases from Book of Bad Decisions is accompanied by a Spotify playlist put together by one of the band members.  In this instance guitarist Tim Sult is responsible for surrounding “How To Shake Hands” with other songs to his liking:  “Since Neil mentioned Jimi Hendrix and Bill Hicks in ‘How To Shake Hands’, I decided to make a playlist including both.  Classic guitar playing meets classic comedy.  What could go wrong?”

Exploded View release “Raven Raven” ahead of full album due this September.

EXPLODED VIEW ANNOUNCE SOPHOMORE ALBUM, OBEY,
OUT SEPTEMBER 14TH VIA SACRED BONES, AND NORTH AMERICAN TOURLISTEN TO LEAD SINGLE, “RAVEN RAVEN”
https://youtu.be/Zl-1qPg8iuE

Exploded View is a splintered amalgam of post-punk, krautrock, psych, and funk—all of it drenched in dub echo and driven by the aim of staying engaged. Anika’s drawl crisscrosses
the album’s frenetic grooves unfazed, like a searchlight seeking a ship in a storm,
eyes wide open in vigilance.” – The AV Club, Albums of the Year

Exploded View is the type of album that seeps into your soul. Consciously designed or not, it exposes various unpalatable truths about the way we live now and turns them
into frightening, spellbinding music.” – The Quietus

“As Anika’s voice floats above, the musicians forge taut grooves. Ramping up tension as it progresses, Exploded View builds until everything threatens to burst. But the group keeps it under control through calm, devout repetition.” – NPR Music

Exploded View, the international project of Welsh-bred, Berlin-based Annika Henderson and Mexico City-based Hugo Quezada (Robota) and Martin Thulin (Crocodiles), return with their second full-length album, Obey, out September 28th on Sacred Bones, and news of a fall North American tour. In conjunction with the album announcement, Exploded View present the spooky, hypnotic lead single, “Raven Raven,” of which the band comment, Ever felt like someone is watching your every move? Your every twitch, your every sneeze? Stare back into the face of observation. Never give in to external control. You can break this.”
Leaving behind their live recording process and now a tight three-piece, Exploded View strike a special balance between precise and wild, unshackled and grounded, groovy and unhinged. They have a knack for making the esoteric feel accessible and crafting pop music out of seemingly raw consciousness. This ability to make beautiful music that feels written beyond the veil is at the heart of what makes Exploded View so captivating, and it’s on full display all over Obey. Recorded in Mexico City, the album feels like a liberation of creative impulses and expression allowing the band to reach more mature sonic territories.
Obey flows like a dream sequence with the aptly titled “Lullaby” opening the album; it slowly lures the listener into a lucid state, preparing them for the journey to come. The ten apocalyptic, yet soothing songs encompass all the classic dream motifs: intrigue, danger, ecstasy, hard to place, yet primordial visions, and a constant sense of movement.

Chicago’s Empty Bottle to host Trouble in Paradise music festival this September.

Trouble in Mind & Paradise of Bachelors Present: Trouble in Paradise

September 13-15 at The Empty Bottle in Chicago, IL

Lineup Includes The Weather Station, Omni, Nap Eyes, FACS,
James Elkington, and more!

Trouble in Mind and Paradise of Bachelors, in cooperation with the venerable Chicago venue the Empty Bottle, are proud to present Trouble in Paradise, a three-day festival showcasing a simpatico sampling of both record labels’ critically acclaimed and wide-ranging international rosters.
PURCHASE TICKETS: THURSDAY ($10) | FRIDAY ($15) | SATURDAY ($15)

Over the course of several years trading records, intel, and jokes, Chicagoans Lisa and Bill Roe of Trouble in Mind and Brendan Greaves and Christopher Smith of Paradise of Bachelors (based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina) have developed an abiding appreciation for each others’ curatorial aesthetic, ethics, and shared bemusement about the shit business of music. Together they got a wild hair to hatch a plan for a festival that felt more like a party. It was, above all else, an excuse to bring together many artists who have never before graced the same stage—and to call something Trouble in Paradise.

The lineup, which features an array of artists including The Weather Station, Omni, Nap Eyes, and FACS, among many others, explores the shared terrain between the respective realms of one label named for a classic blues song and another named for a Herman Melville story. Apparently that means a dedication to compelling songwriters, guitarists, and sounds spanning unhinged rock and roll, architectonic pop, and the frontier fringes of folk and country.

Details about each evening’s lineup, and tickets, are below. A limited number of discounted $30 three-day passes are available. More artists will be announced soon, so please stay tuned.
