Following “Balm Of Gilead” released earlier in the month, “as snarling and clobbering as anything you could hope for from the band” (The Fader), Iceage today unveil a second new single with “Broken Hours.” A five minute epic of doom-laden swing and crashing, spidery riffs that backdrop Elias Bender Rønnenfelt’s howling incantation: “Dying figures, they settle in / Broken hours / It lingers on” – it’s another heart-racing transmission from a band at the peak of their craft.

Iceage cap off their 2018 North American touring tomorrow night in Brooklyn with a show at Elsewhere; their biggest ever UK headline show follows in London on December 7th.

Beyondless, released this past June via Matador, is the culmination of Iceage’s output so far. It boasts an earthy and hypnotic sound that pays tribute to American music, from country honk brawls to sleazy soul revues to cocaine blues. Echoes of The Waterboys to Exile-period Stones to John Cale are laced with a ubiquitous air of ecstatic abandon and channelled via masterful songwriting. Throughout their career, the band’s charm has rested in their running ahead of themselves with blind confidence; on Beyondless, Iceage are treading with a disarming assurance, but no loss of charm.

Today, Durand Jones & The Indications are proud to announce their return with American Love Call, a fierce album that reckons with how to balance love and fury of modern day America, due March 1st via Dead Oceans/Colemine Records. Hailed by NPR’s All Things Considered as “old-school soul with a new-school honesty,” The Indications conjure the dynamism of Jackie Wilson, Curtis Mayfield, AND TheImpressions. This young band of twenty-somethings are students of soul. Helmed by foil vocalists Jones and Frazer, and rounded out by Blake Rhein (guitarist), Kyle Houpt(bassist), and Steve Okonski (keyboard), The Indications released their self-titled debut album to much acclaim on renowned Midwestern soul label, Colemine Records. The album quickly picked up steam on the back of the band’s booming live show and the enthusiastic recommendation of independent record store clerks across the country.

The group’s second effort, American Love Call, is an album made the way the Indications dreamed it’d sound, a sprawling and limitless equation; grand and cinematic, yet focused on fleeting details.

Recorded at Brooklyn’s Studio G earlier this summer, American Love Call is an expansion of the band’s sound, making a leap forward in both style and songwriting. Pulling influence from a variety of sounds like R&B, gospel, early folk rock, and classical music, the Indications’ second effort has a newfound confidence, with Jones’ bellowing voice and Frazer’s soothing falsetto filled out by backing vocals and instrumentation. Thematically, the album covers tough ground, like the danger of simplifying and romanticizing the past, but it also attempts to reconcile, searching for unifying commonalities. Brooding, bold, and pensive, American Love Call is the result of the band fleshing out its craft and elevating its dreamy, old-soul sound.

Japanese sensations CHAI graced the shores of the US for an all-too-brief visit in September, with shows in New York and Los Angeles. Known for their energetic shows, matching outfits, absolutely insane music videos, and innovative concept of “NEO-Kawaii,” or “New Cute” (an empowering way to look at the frequently oppressive concept of cuteness in their home country), they captured the hearts of everyone who saw them perform. Pitchfork dubbed them a “Rising” artist and they just completed a hugely successful stint opening for Superorganism in the UK. So what’s next for the trendsetting young women of CHAI?

How about surprise-dropping a new video earlier this month for a new song “GREAT JOB“? How about announcing their first batch of tour dates in US for 2019, including their first US festival performance at Boise’s Treefort Music Fest? How about a return to Austin for SXSW? 2019 promises to be an even bigger year for CHAI than 2018, with more live dates to come, so this is only the beginning.

CHICAGO, November 14, 2018  –  Pitchfork and The Art Institute of Chicago today announce Midwinter, an all new music and art experience taking place February 15-17 in Chicago. The three-day event will bring together thought-provoking musical performances with iconic works of art. A truly elevated experience, it will feature more than 30 musical acts, produced by Pitchfork, performing amid masterpieces from the Art Institute’s wide-ranging collection. Select performances will also include original music productions inspired by art in the museum.

“Midwinter is an ambitious new concept, and with it we’re intentionally trying to push the boundaries of live music. Placing forward-thinking musicians in the context of the Art Institute, we’re opening a dialogue between mediums, and creating a unique cultural event,” said Pitchfork festival director Adam Krefman. “This February, you’ll be able to look at a Monet while listening to original music from Nico Muhly; Laurie Anderson will occupy the same space as Georgia O’Keeffe, while the glitch-rap of JPEGMAFIA is playing in another wing of the museum. I can’t think of another event quite like it and we are excited to bring it to life in Chicago.”

“The Art Institute is thrilled to collaborate with Pitchfork on the development and presentation of a new, unprecedented art and music experience,” said Jacqueline Terrassa, Women’s Board Chair of Learning and Public Engagement. “Midwinter expands the possibilities of what audiences can experience at an art museum, and—uniquely—at the Art Institute. Like so many works of art in our galleries, which both drew from and upturned traditions when they were first made, Midwinter foregrounds creative practice as visionary, highly interdisciplinary, and genre-defying.”

The Midwinter lineup features Kamasi Washington, Oneohtrix Point Never, Slowdive, Panda Bear, Laurie Anderson, DJ Koze, Tortoise (TNT 21st Anniversary Performance), William Basinski (The Disintegration Loops with the Chicago Philharmonic and On Time Out of Time), Perfume Genius, Deerhunter, Zola Jesus, Joey Purp, Mykki Blanco, Mount Eerie, Grouper, Jlin, Yves Tumor, Weyes Blood, Hiss Golden Messenger, serpentwithfeet, JPEGMAFIA, Sudan Archives, Madison McFerrin, Mary Lattimore, Daniel Bachman, Haley Fohr (of Circuit des Yeux), Marisa Anderson, Smerz and Baba Stiltz.

In addition to live performances, Midwinter will feature original pre-recorded compositions, unearthed recordings, and soundscapes from Nico Muhly, Tashi Wada & Julia Holter, Stars of the Lid, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Midori Takada, Visible Cloaks, Helado Negro and Ilyas Ahmed. These pieces of music will be inspired by and respond to iconic pieces in the museum’s collection.

Pitchfork Radio will also broadcast live from Midwinter. Attendees can sit in on artist interviews, enjoy intimate performances, and listen to deep cuts from rare vinyl collections and playlists curated by Pitchfork editors.

Tickets for Midwinter start at $50 per day for a single night general admission ticket, which includes access to The Art Institute of Chicago’s collection, select musical performances, gallery soundscapes, and live recordings of Pitchfork Radio. Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase tickets for special add-on performances starting at $15. With a name making reference to obscure minutia of Charles Darwin’s research regarding the adaptive evolution of birds’ beaks, one might expect a certain esoteric character to a band. And Darwin’s Finches is certainly an anomaly of its own. But that doesn’t mean that they’re not a brilliantly catchy band. In fact, Good Morning Creatures II, the trio’s third album is a tart and twangy, hook-filled 10-song batch of great rock songs that sound as if they’d evolved completely out of contact with the rest of the rock world.
The Galveston, TX based band of pranksters, formed around a biology class, who got their start crashing biker bars and playing shows that provoked fisticuffs, Darwin’s Finches aren’t a normal band.
The album’s music hearkens to late-80s weirdo indie-rock tinged with psychedelic Western vibes like Camper Van Beethoven, Butthole Surfers, Alice Donut, and the Pixies combined with the demented melodies of The Frogs. Guitarist/vocalist and bandleader Justin Clay sports a master crooner’s wail; sounding something akin to a young Paul Westerberg.
Darwin’s Finches was formed in 2006 by Justin as part band, part prank. Joined originally by friends in his Biology class, Clay and a rotating cast of players have played everything from pop-up shows at biker bars (to mixed reviews), art museums, random national parks, shows at clubs that ended with fruit fights and a culminating three-hour show at the legendary Balinese Room that ended with a guitar sacrificed to the Gulf of Mexico.
Justin took a break from music in 2012 for two years to enjoy his family and the birth of his son, Odin.  When he returned to music in 2014, he reformed Darwin’s Finches with long-time music partners, Cody Honey on drums and Morgan Moody on bass.
Good Morning Creatures II will be available on LP and download on December 14th, 2018 via Artificial Head Record & Tapes (AHRT).

Beijing duo Gong Gong Gong pose an intriguing challenge to listeners. There are no drums in this band, but it is undoubtedly percussive. Singer Tom Ng’s lyrics are in Cantonese, but the urgency of previously shared single “Siren” is plain as day. Their driving, stripped-down transnational blues, tapping into the spirit of Bo Diddley, the Monks, and psychedelic music from West Africa to Southeast Asia, is both foreign and familiar. Last week, their debut single for Wharf Cat was released, featuring the aforementioned “Siren,” and now the b-side, the instrumental “Something’s Happening.”

Additionally, earlier last week, they shared a song off a forthcoming limited-edition (only 100 will be made) tour flexi-disc 7″ split, which also features tour mates Flasher and Public Practice. They’ve also announced a NY date opening up for post-punk legends Bush Tetras in December. Catch them on tour the US, and listen to the new output of this utterly unique and singular band.

Additionally, the band has recently announced a batch of December US tour dates with Brooklyn’s Public Practice and Beijing duo Gong Gong Gong. At the close of a marathon year supporting their breakthrough album, Con Todo El Mundo (out now on Dead Oceans/Night Time Stories), Khruangbin return with an exciting addition – an update on Vince Guaraldi’s timeless “Christmas Time Is Here.” 

“Growing up the three of us all had very different Christmases,” says bassist Laura Lee. “But we recently discovered we all had the exact same favorite Christmas song. When we realized it, we sat down to play it and it came together instantly. In 15 minutes we had this recorded. It was like the best Christmas present ever.”

With ambling sweetness and a fresh, beat-driven groove, Khruangbin have taken this oft-covered classic and made it wholly their own.

Having just wrapped up a massive tour supporting Leon Bridges, Khruangbin will hit the road next month for a slew of headline dates across North America. The tour kicks off in Phoenix on Tue. Nov. 6th and includes shows at The Fox Theatre in Oakland, The Wiltern in Los Angeles, The Vic in Chicago, the 9:30 Club in DC, two nights at Brooklyn Steel in NYC, and more.  A full list of dates are below.

BODEGA releases “Name Escape” from their excellent debut album, “Endless Scroll”

Ahead of their upcoming tour dates, BODEGA have shared the video for “Name Escape.” A typically stylish yet tongue-in-cheek visual complete with freeform dancers, the “Name Escape” video was directed by band members Nikki Belfiglio and Ben Hozie.On the video, Hozie says, “‘Name Escape’ details at-this-moment observations from a night out at the now-defunct (and missed) Bushwick venue Palisades. The Smiths blare out of the P.A. as I chat with people I’ve seen hundreds of times but will never really know. For the advertisement clip of the memory malfunction, Nikki directed us doing big rock hype in a big rock warehouse hyperlinked from early aughts ‘alternative’ vids. The strange thing about alienation is that it’s often beautiful and fun.”

“Name Escape” is the third BBC Radio 6 Music playlisted single taken from BODEGA’s debut album, Endless Scroll. The album was met with rave reviews in the UK from the likes of Observer, Guardian, Independent, Financial Times, The Times, DIY, Uncut and more. Recalling the rich history of New York’s musical heritage while keeping its sight on the future, Endless Scroll revitalizes the rock and roll vocabulary under the influence of post punk, contemporary pop, hip-hop, kraut rock, and folk-derived narrative songwriting. Endless Scroll was recorded and produced by Austin Brown (Parquet Courts) on the same Tascam 388 tape machine used for their album Light Up Gold.

Come February 2019, the band will return to Europe for a new run of dates – which includes their largest headline show to date at London’s Scala on Wednesday, February 20th. BODEGA will be joined by Beijing duo Gong Gong Gong as main support for the tour. Tickets for all dates are available now.

Protomartyr and Preoccupations to release split 7″ single covering each other’s tunes.

OUT 11/16 ON DOMINOLISTEN TO PROTOMARTYR COVER PREOCCUPATIONS’ SONG “FORBIDDEN”

CO-HEADLINING TOUR BEGINS NEXT MONTH

Today, Protomartyr announce the upcoming release of a split 7″ with their friends and future tourmates Preoccupations. Conceptually similar to Protomartyr’s recent split 7″ with Spray Paint, the release features each band covering the other, with Protomartyr performing their rendition of Preoccupations’ “Forbidden,” while Preoccupations give Protomartyr’s “Pontiac ’87” a reworking. You can listen to Protomartyr’s cover of “Forbidden” now, with the 7″ being released by Domino on Nov. 16th. Protomartyr’s singer Joe Casey had this to say of the band’s cover: “There’s an old adage that goes something like, ‘if you’re going to cover a song by a beloved Canadian band, it’s best to pick the second shortest one.’ So, ‘Forbidden’ it is. We all really liked the outro part and had the brilliant idea to extend it. And that, my friends, is how you make musical history.”For those who find this sonic pairing palatable to the ear, the two bands will join up for a co-headlining tour in late November, almost exactly one month from now and shortly after the release of the 7”. Additionally, Protomartyr have just been announced as the “special guest” for the anticipated grand reopening of Detroit’s UFO Factory, a much beloved venue that was damaged by developers one year ago.
