Unknown Mortal Orchestra surprises everyone with an instrumental album – “IC-01 Hanoi” – out later this month.

UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA
ANNOUNCES SURPRISE INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM

IC-01 HANOI, OUT 10/26 ON JAGJAGUWAR; LISTEN TO “HANOI 6”

While recording Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s latest release, Sex & Food, Ruban Nielson, his longtime collaborator Jacob Portrait and his brother Kody Nielson, found themselves in the Vietnamese city of Hanoi at Phu Sa Studios.  During the recording process for Sex & Food the band recorded live sessions with local musician Minh Nguyen on Sáo Trúc, Đàn Môi, and Vietnamese Percussion and Nielson’s father, Chris, on Flugelhorn, Saxophone and keyboards.  These sessions became IC-01 Hanoi: a sonic distillation of the band’s influences in Jazz, Krautrock, and the avant-garde.  At its core Hanoi is a record of exploration, finding its closest antecedent in Miles Davis’ experimental On The Corner – itself a record full of nods toward avant-garde composers and jazz outsiders alike.  Hanoi finds Ruban amplifying and stretching out on lead guitar, with a blown-out and wandering fuzz tone that slinks throughout the sessions.  The rest of the group match Ruban’s melodic diversions with aplomb, mining their talents and finding as easy a role in the fusion of funk as they do in the more ambient and abstract tangents on Hanoi. IC-01 Hanoi will see release on October 26th via Jagjaguwar.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s new single, “Hunnybee,” is a delightful treat.

UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA SHARE VIDEO
FOR NEW SINGLE “HUNNYBEE”

Today, Unknown Mortal Orchestra share a new video for album track and single “Hunnybee.” From the day their new album Sex & Food was released, it was clear “Hunnybee” was really hitting a chord with fans in a special way.  A live show favorite, the song draws lyrical inspiration from UMO mastermind Ruban Nielson‘s daughter, whose middle name gave the song its title. A beautifully understated song, it still moves with propulsion that gives fans reason to dance. The video remains stylistically in tune with previous videos for Sex & Food‘s previous singles “Everyone Acts Crazy Nowadays” and “American Guilt.” Watch it below.

EVERYONE ACTS CRAZY NOWADAYS

SEX & FOOD OUT APRIL 6 ON JAGJAGUWAR

Today, Unknown Mortal Orchestra says through music what we all know to be true. “Everyone Acts Crazy Nowadays” is perhaps the first straight-forward dance song off the forthcoming album, Sex & Food (out 4/6 on Jagjaguwar).  The track was leaked early to fans who pre-ordered Sex & Food via a mysterious package that arrived on Thursday. It contained a pamphlet simply titled “Age of Paranoia.” The pamphlet included comics and lyrics by Ruban, as well as a link to everyoneactscrazynowadays.com. The song appeared there Friday morning.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s new album, “Sex & Food,” due April 6th.

UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM,
SEX & FOOD, OUT 4/6 ON JAGJAGUWAR

WATCH THE VIDEO FOR “AMERICAN GUILT”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-JlcmCxIXU

Today, Unknown Mortal Orchestra proudly announce their new record, Sex & Food, which will be released April 6th via Jagjaguwar. The follow-up to their critically acclaimed record Multi-Love, Sex & Food sees UMO mastermind Ruban Nielson tap into both familiar and unexpected territory. The delightfully shape-shifting album filters real-deal serious themes such as “What are we consuming? How is it affecting us, and why does everything feel so bad and weird sometimes?” through a vibrant sonic lens that spans battered drum-machine funk, doomy and thrashing rock, and pink-hued psychedelic disco. It’s not a dark record, per se. Even the album’s title, Sex & Food, focuses on two of the most undeniably pleasurable experiences in life; positivity despite the strangeness of our times. The album was recorded in a variety of locales from Seoul and Hanoi to Reykjavik, Mexico City, and Auckland, not to mention Nielson’s home base studio in Portland. It is a practical musical travelogue, traversing the world as well as a wide spectrum of human experience. Nielson grapples with new, sometimes dismal realities, but succeeds in pulling the epiphanies from the chafe. Watch the video for the first single, “American Guilt,” and pre-order the album below. Additionally, here is some context behind “American Guilt” from Ruban Nielson:

“American Guilt” is an attempt to capture some of the feelings floating around these days. In a perverse way I wanted to embrace this abandoned genre of rock music that I keep reading is “dead” and invite people to hear what this living dead genre sounds like in the UMO universe. It was recorded in Hanoi, Vietnam during monsoon season in a studio built for traditional Vietnamese music. Additional recording was done in Mexico City but our sessions were interrupted by one of the devastating earthquakes that occurred there last year. As we slept in the Parque de Mexico, unable to get back to our Airbnb, we heard a man yell “viva la Mexico!” and I put this in the song out of respect for them.
